A bit too wild!

The wife and I were charged by a large female Elephant in Kruger National Park in South Africa. I was sitting in the car with it in gear while taking photos.

A friend had given me a 2 x multiplier as he said 100 mm focal length is good for wildlife. Because I was unfamiliar with this, I did`nt realise how close it was getting. It was only the volume of the wife`s screams that alerted me. If I had stalled the car, I think we would have been in real trouble. It was definitely not a mock charge as the herd had a number of babies with them and she was the Matriarch.

A friend of mine and his family were stuck in their car in Namibia for 24 hours due to Elephants. He hit a small one in the dark which wrecked his car and it died on his bonnet. The others would not leave it. It took 12 hours before another vehicle turned up and another 12 hours for help to arrive.

An Interesting post Andy.

And hopefully a few interesting questions, considering they appear to be camping in the bush.

Should wild animals have a sanctuary free from human interaction?

Bull elephants have a reputation of being a handfull, especially when frisky.
Would it not have been better to have tranquilised and moved to a less remote area ?

How much should we accomodate that in wild areas there is inherent risk, And laissez faire ?

How much should mankind ensure any threat is neutralised by and what are the ethics?

Hopefully food for thought !?
