50w vertical axis wind generator.

Just wondered if anyone has used the Maplin vertical wind turbine, and is it any good?

At 50W, it will be no use at all.

I have the Rutland 504, 80 watt turbine and it is not that good unless it is blowing a full gale. Even then, it is only a trickle charger.

If you have the space to carry something a bit bigger, there are 300 watt turbines on ebay for about £180. I am thinking of getting one myself.

From their spec:

Produces 12V up to 4amp ( 50 watts) in a 35 mph breeze

That's quite a strong breeze!.

Start-up wind speed 8-10 M/S (30 km/h)
ie about 18 mph

So for the majority of time you won't get an output then only 4A max.

Spend your money on solar panels and batteries!!

In reality, you never get anything like the output that the makers claim. You can probably half the figure (in my experience). They possibly get their figures under ideal conditions like a wind tunnel or by spinning the turbine with a variable speed electric motor. In the real world, air is turbulent and gusting. This affects all turbines badly and reduces the output.

That's why the best ones are out to sea!!

Ones low down as Maingate says NEVER get wonderful results.

We probably get less days of 35mph winds than days of bright sunshine.

Yeah but what will you get doing sixty down the motorway LOL

so what we need is a 3.5 watt motor that will push a two ton camper at 60mph and we have cracked it ,and half a watt left to run a kettle and the telly too boot .happy times ahead
