Or more precisely a French sim card.

I am off to France skiing in a few weeks and want to take the iPad.

What's the best way of getting a tempoary 3G sim?

I should imagine in the telephone section of the first supermarket that you find. Will have to be pay as you go of course, as I'm sure you don't want to set up an account.

However, if it were me I'd be looking for free wi-fi, which seems to be much more readily available every week.

I'm told that France don't have the same casual attitude to just buying a sim and topping it it like we do here.

Sadly Biggles you are right. Without a French bank account it is impossible to do anything based on a local SIM. I suspect you will need to look out for Wifi.

I was always under the impression that anyone can buy a pre-paid sim card in France. You may well have to give your details but with pre-paid cards there is no need for any credit checks etc.

You can buy French sims in advance from various firms, here's one: Prepaid sim card for France

We also found this. Cash and credit/debit cards were not acceptable. Only a French bank account and a residential address in France to get a SIM card.

I do not know whether you can get them any other way, but I do know that an English friend visiting

asked if I could buy one for her using my French address & via my Credit Agricole bank account.

I quote from the above website:

The SIM card delivery in EU is totally FREE for you! Get it delivered right at your door. For other countries the delivery fees are only €2.
Please note that to order a mobile pack you will need a French address and to pay €7.90.

Apologies, should've read the small print! Can a French camp site be given as the address?

They wouldn't accept that when we tried.

Its all to do with anti terorism regulations we understand.
