Looking for a small portable radio as above, that will pick up English speaking service whilst abroad. Any views ,recommendations and makes.
I did have a Tecsun radio a few years ago , similar size to the old transistor radios I had as a teenager but I want some thing a little bigger.

If you're wishing to listen to the BBC World Service be aware that transmissions to Europe ceased quite some years ago.

You can usually pick up transmissions to North Africa but the broadcast times in English are limited and quite a bit of the content is, unsurprisingly, Africa-focused.

I have given up on this as an option. BBC 5 Live on MW is listenable through much of France. But better still I use my phone with the TuneIn app to listen. You can choose a low rate channel stream to reduce data usage and with mobiles now relatively unrestricted for use abroad this is a great option.

I've yet to find a solution for my radio habit whilst abroad. It was brilliant while on an air with wifi ... Radio 4 to my heart's content! What's the app you refer to Chris?

A long wave receiver for BBC Radio 4.

Like this Beige Steepletone Brighton 1950 Retro Cream 3 Band Portable Radio FM MW and LW | eBay

But the BBC only has a couple of valves left - but they've been saying that for twenty years or more. Anyway, when they run out of these valves LW will stop. They say.

Long wave doesn't reach that far unfortunately, according to Wikipedia up to 1200 miles or so.

I have never been able to pickup Radio 4 in the south of France.

TuneIn ... there's a free and a paid version. When you install it there's an attempt to steer you towards a trial of the Premium version.

Just cancel that and use the free version with adverts.

Make sure that when you start playing a station to open the menu and see if there's a low rate stream available. That significantly reduces the amount of data usage.

For apple TuneIn Radio by TuneIn
TuneIn Radio on the App Store

It's very good, fine for World service.

A shame that 198 will disappear when the valves are gone, in the late 70s it was the most powerful transmitter in Europe and ideal as a nav aid for little aeroplanes before gps.

We’ve been using ‘simple radio’ app which is also free. No buffering. Use a Bluetooth speaker with it.

Low data option not available on this, but we have 12gb per month on one phone and with not being allowed to use it as a hotspot, so we are data rich on this device.

Loving Smooth Radio at the mo.

With the Tune In app it is possible to skip the adverts by just hitting pause then play again :)

I used to use it to listen to one specific station but stopped as it started to go wrong - loads of noise and distortion (like when an old telephones speaker went wrong and you had to give it a whack) happens after a random time and I have to press a button (ANY Button) on the phone to make it sound right again. now I stream direct from that stations website instead.
(All other media apps are fine. Just Tune In has the issue)

If for use in the motorhome, do you have satellite TV? There are usually numerous radio channels as well.
