I am trying to find a spare 3.9Kg propane bottle full or empty. I have several larger sizes if anyone wants to do a swap.

not this ol chestnut again ..good luck with that one bud

Not calor is the problem. I have various bottles from Flogas, supergaz and several others that are regional.
I have done the research and I cannot get a new 3.9 bottle without a genuine one to exchange, I don't want to pay Calors price for bottle rental.

I have the blue one you can have it if its any good to you. I'm in Sheffield.

i usually go to my local scrap merchant, they normally have some that the scrap lads nick to fill their transit pick up with. i gave a fiver for a 13kg calour just last week

Thanks for the offer from Sheffield , if I am heading that way I will give you a shout.
I have tried civic amenity tips and scrapyards but both say they can no longer sell gas bottles.

We have that problem with the tips round my area now. Flo Gas do a 3.9Kg cylinder unfortunately there is no saving on Calor prices. Looked up Calor online prices and Chorley Bottle gas for Flo Gas prices. Calor 15.49 CBG £16.00.
Flo Gas includes BP gas as well but they seem to be trying to re split the brands. Bolton Bottled Gas went from Flow Gas to BP but both will happily accept eithers cylinders
I'm 10 miles outside of MCR on the A580 and you are welcome to a Calor cylinder.
3.9Kg's = gas too expensive to burn.

Top man, I am in Chorley, and Rochdale next week so I can pick up.

Health and Safety have stepped in on this one and local recycling are not allowed to let you have any of the old bottles in case one explodes in which case they could be held responsible. So if you can get one put it in the MH and arrange a rather large bang then you may / may not get your council to give you a new motor home ..

I managed to pick up TWO 6kg ones of Gumtree .. Both empty ....... :-(

Try Energas or Ebay

Energas - Independent Gas Supplier UK Welding Gas Industrial Gases Supplier - Before I changed to a fixed LPG tank I used Energas who have depots (see link) from Middlesborough to Telford and from Grimsby to Leicester. They are cheaper than Calor but I would check their website and ring first to ensure they do your size as I always used 6kg. They give cylinders free of hire and even delivered free of charge if I paid over the phone first. As I say this was a while ago so ring to check this first.
You may also try Ebay as i just sold 2 Calor 6kgs on there.

Try the tips

whilst it's 3 or 4 years since I last did it, our local tips were happy to let you take a cylinder if you ask nicely and aren't too official; the cyls may be marked "property of Calor" etc, but you are going to take it back to them for a re-fill, aren't you? Just helping the tip guys do their recycling a bit easier etc...

You can always get a slightly larger one and swap it for a smaller one, or swap butane for propane, esp at a proper dealer rather than a camp site.

I found that if you don't make a fuss. Go at a quiet time. Just park next to the bottle cage with a fiver in your hand. You may find its half full of gas. Serious bargain!

Richard and info everyone else - Its not just the HSE that is the issue here, but three other factors. 1. Most CA/Household waste sites are owned by large Waste companies such as Biffa, Viridor, SITA etc who would not think twice about sacking their employees on the spot for breach of policy and legislation. 2. Forementioned legislation under the EPA 1990/EPR Reg's mean that not only would the person selling you the gas bottle but also the technically compentent manager for the site and the directors of the company would be liable to prosecution/fine/imprisonment. 3 -Other minor legislation would also mean you had purchased 'waste' and therefore would require a waste carriers certificate and would be bound by a duty of care (section 34 EPA 1990) - summary only convictions which mean up to a £5K fine.

Just saying what you think is a little £5 sorter for everyone could turn into a right pile of paperwork, job loss, criminal record - forwarned is forarmed.

My opinion is pay the money to a reputable company be safe, be protected. However if you want to go down that route, try scrap yard (ELV Sites) and smaller privately owned skip companies where the owners are taking on the risk as opposed to the guys at the cliff face. Hope thats useful.

It seems that there is no clear policy on this. Be it local tips or even the calor outlets.
I went to get a 19kg propane from an offcial calor outlet. Had a 6kg lightweight propane that still had some gas and didn't want to lose the gas but really needed the 19kg bottle for a long trip away.
Told the calor guy behind the counter and he said
"Oh just take that empty small blue calor bottle there as the last guy in just gave it back to us without the paperwork and he no loner wanted it and you can exchange that for a 19kg propane"
I asked if i had to swap like for like and he said no just so long as you have a bottle to swap it doesn't matter.
If the calor representatives are happy to do it.
I have also picked up a bottle from a tip no problem with no valve on top and been able to swap this at the same calor outlet i always use.

You can swap any Calor gas bottle for any other size EXCEPT you cannot swap large bottles for 6kg / 7kg or 6kg / &kg for larger or smaller.
