Is it possible to have 2 PC's (netbook & laptop) connected together to use one wireless internet connection? We are paying for internet on the site we are on but we can only use one or the other at any one time with the logon (tried & it won't allow you to connect another machine with the same logon )
I'm sure there must be a way of using one as a proxy server but not sure how to do it anymore. Also how would I connect the 2 (I have a standard network cable)

Is there any simple way to do it?

We're using a wireless router. Have had 3 laptops working on it at once. We could also connect with ethernet cable and have up to 4 devices.

I don't have a router with me, I am on a campsite in Spain. I'm sure in the past I have had one computer connected to the internet & used it as a proxy server connected to another computer. Problem is it's ages since I messed about doing this back i8n the days when we were still using a modem (pre ADSL days) to get onto the web

configure pc1 to allow other computers to use its connection to the net - then connect pc2 to pc1 on an ad-hoc network.

or use a crossover cable - the normal one needs a router, and two cables. xover cabel availabel from pcworld etc

Thanks Guyd, I will check out the cables I have, I brought a couple of network cables with me I will have to see if I have a crossover one (got one at home I know but can't remember if I brought it with me)

BTW where do I find the option to allow other computer to use it's connection??

I have my desktop PC hard wired to the router and the laptop using the wireless port. The LT is set up to "Search" for Wi-Fi signals and defaults to our own. It also (of course) picks up next door's signal, but as I don't have their password, and they don't have ours we cannot use each other's system. FYI it is a Netgear wgr614 and it works prety well - no probs at all so far.

Just checked the network cables I have & didn't bring a crossover one  . Might have a look & see if they have one in the Chinese bazzar shops, only a couple of them here though & not many other shops.

what OS?

usually tick ""allow other computers to use this computer's internet connection" on the lan properties, under network properties.

Plenty of info on the web on how to share a single connection, try Googling 'wifi connection sharing'

UK: access via mobile phone is pretty good, look for free WiFi though.

I have used my HTC HD phone on T Mobile data contract as a WiFi Router, a simple click on the settings. Any wireless computer can use it providing they have my security key.

Just upgraded to iphone4 on same T Mobile account - that has a 'Personal Hotspot', the apple wifi router, which allows up to 3 wireless connections at once and again my security key is needed.

I've sat in UK fields watching catchup TV on my laptop over the WiFi link but wouldn't recommend it if you don't have an unlimited data connection. Would only use it abroad for an emergency as my phones have always allowed full email and web browsing adequate for social catchup.

There's lots of advice on internet for cheap data and phone usage by purchasing european SIM cards.

My favourite route is however to find a free WiFi service in a town or village cafe and SKYPE or Facetime a call using free WiFi which costs nothing. If I want to videocall the kids, i'll send them a text saying "Skype me". Sad and nerdy I know but this technology is available and when it comes together allows free calls/conferencing and web browsing. There are even apps for the phones to detect free WiFi points.
