Is there a Digital HDD recorder which will run off 12 volts? I was thinking of replacing the "flying saucer" ariel on our van with a better one or a sat. dish. I got to thinking, with that set up we would switch on the TV and watch whatever rubbish happened to be on at the time, here my HDD Recorder is full of programmes I've recorded and will never get around to watching in my lifetime (i.e. I have two Coast series recorded and unwatched plus lots of others), so if I took it with me I could watch programmes which are watchable, I'd have to use my inverter for that, so a recorder which would run direct off 12v would be better.

If your TV has a USB port, put your recordings on a memory stick and watch them that way. Most TV's have an AV channel, so there could be a few ways of doing it.

Your 240 volt recorder will probably use very little power, so running it off an inverter will not drag your batteries down.

Slightly off topic I know BUT:

I have a VHS video recorder and I noticed that it only draws 9 watts of power. So forget Blu Ray, DVD and HD, If I want to record one programme while watching another, I can do it for no cash outlay (I have plenty of new blank video tapes, 2 TV's and 2 aerials on the van. The hard part is getting off my butt and doing something about it. :sleep-040:

There are a few makes that are sold as 240 volt but come with a small box that has a 12 volt output. I have an old model Sagem that will work off 12 volts & I have a Fetch TV HDD I got from Tesco (I think they don't sell them anymore) FetchTV but you can buy direct from them. The Fetch TV SmartBox 8320HD also will run off 12volts. I have used both my hard disk recorders in the van for watching programs we recorded & also recorded programs on them & I only have a £3 indoor aerial (couldn't be bothered fitting a permanent aerial) I have rarely not managed to get a digital signal here in the UK or in France & Spain. I found that many programs on TV in France & Spain were originally US/english but dubbed into French/Spanish but found some of them you can switch the audio to get them in English.

Thanks Guys, for the advice. So far we've manage with books and radio4 but as the nights draw in we may have to resort to the goggle box, we don't like pubs.
