Hi,

Being new to the whole RV / Motor Home world im looking for a bit of advice...

Im planning to spend 1-2 Years sort here and there arround europe, im lucky enough to have a online business that just requires me to be able to get online every now and again to do the bits required.. I have a passion for the Alps and being a Snowboarder and Mountain Biker looking to fold this into the whole mix..

Ive been looking online, and have a budget of 25k to get setup for this.. Now wanting a little luxury and space ive been looking at the american models arround..

What im trying to find out which manufacturer is best for the winter..

Looking mainly for Onboard LPG, Generator Tanks and Heating..

I have seen Fleetwood, Four Winds, Coachman and Glendale that are all in my price range and budget..

Or should I be looking at Euro models??

Cheers

Look for something you can get down a country lane, wouldnt want to take one of those american barges down narrow roads you dont know whats at the end.
Also, think of MPG, 8 to 10 with a barge, 25 to 30 with something like a 6 berth european coachbuilt.
Cheers, Pete.
PS, welcome to the site.

Inclined to agree, and then there is the availability of parts for American RV's compared to European fayre, should you break down or be involved in a scrape.

I personally would be looking at a 'A' class Hymer or similar.

Like Zeezee said: forget the American battleships, you will not get around on narrow winding continental roads (certainly not in the Alps) and villages.
Look for a German made MH they are better winterised than French or Italian ones. If choosing LPG: very difficult to find stations in e.g Spain, Portugal, Italy (also a problem for there are 3 types of couplings)
Eberspacher diesel heating is the best solution in the winter I guess.

You will need an MOT if you buy in the UK. And renew it in the UK.

If you buy in Europe, you will probably need a permanent address there.

I've got an old leaky Talbot Merlin 4 berth that runs on LPG. You can have that for 25K !!!

We did 2 years ( 26 countries) in a Hymer B544, LPG, solar, couple of 110 batteries & an inverter. We went up to Nord Kapp - in fact we were about 6 weeks inside the arctic circle with out any probs. We didn't have silver screens - If I went that far north again I would - bit chilly in the pull down bed.

I'd go with a 5 series as they are short enough to get into & out of anywhere ( roads are loads wider & clearer in Europe) LHD obviously

Whatever you do go for German as they are the best quality around and will keep you warm in the coldest of places.I would also if you are traveling as a couple try to keep to 6.5 metres an RV would for me just be a nightmare and take the fun out of wild camping i.e a bit obvious and not very inconspicuous.
We have a Hymer b544 also and will be sticking with HYMER when we full time in a few years, the wife adores our little home and in fact the van feels more like home to her than the house or any house has.We love em:):)

hi fluidd motion
let me state where i`m comin from.
i once had my own motorhome/caravan repair buisness dealing mainly with damp and accident damage and all internal equipment.
so heres my tuppence worth.
any "A" class hymer thats built on a merc chassis.
parts in europe especially are readily available for all ages of vehicle.
age is not important a good low milage s700 fixed end beed room is all you will ever need 93/94 vintage is perfect, and best of all you`ll almost all your money back when you come to sell it in a couple of years time.
i`v bought a couple of these in germany and brought them back to ireland, they wernt any cheaper but a far better selection.
all the best and let us know how you get on
good luck willis.......

good luck with your travels hope you enjoy it!!! i planned a 9-12mth euro trip to inc.ukraine/russia but someone ran onto my fist 7 times lol 12 month probation put paid to my trip until july this year, then all being well i'll be off.:)

i have an ldv convoy self build but simple to work on and running on veg oil,and ample room for two and two dogs.

UKRAINE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it's the wildest place we ever went ( & we only took the bus from Poland - couldn't get insured ) It is as crazy as a sack full of frogs - in the sun- listening to Rick Astley- with chillis rubbed in their eyes etc etc

Glad to here you're handy with your hands- think you'll have your work cut out

Good luck

Aaaaaahh the stuff of dreams:). It's good to know people are out there doing this stuff. Have a great time

If you're a winter type avoid a 3 axle (traction) , go for rear wheel drive and I agree Hymer are best but I have heard Euromobil guarantee everything works down to -20 ,
