I have just seen on another group that because of the high fuel prices, certain hgv from 1st July for 12 months
Road tax is now £1 for 12 months.
This applies to motorhomes over 3500kg

According to Co-Pilot AI (and AI is never wrong, as we know ;) )

"A 3,850 kg motorhome sits just above the 3,500 kg threshold, so it is firmly in:

PHGV – Private Heavy Goods Vehicle (Tax Class 10)

This is the correct UK VED class for any private motorhome over 3,500 kg GVW.

Summary

  • Your GVW: 3,850 kg
  • Tax class: PHGV (Private HGV)
  • Annual VED: £165 (or £1 during the temporary HGV tax suspension period)
  • Reason: It’s over 3,500 kg and used privately, not commercially."

well, my plan is to do as I said above - SORN before the end of June and then retax somtime in the first few days in July (you can't retax on line after SORNING for a few days) and see what I get charged :)

I pay each month so it makes no difference other than not being able to use the van on the road legally for a few days.
In fact, as I pay DD each month, the new rate should be automatic, but I doubt there is a mechanism to pay 8 pence a month (£1/year) so may as well just refresh the process and see what happens.
I'll let you kids know if it happens or not 🤟

also .... Just another thought ....
The Link says
"From 1 July 2026, most HGVs will qualify for a temporary reduced vehicle tax rate of £1 for 12 months.
If your vehicle is eligible, the reduced rate will be applied automatically when you tax your vehicle between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027."
That suggests a full year for a quid if you start your tax between those dates?

So you take out a years tax in July - £1 for the year.
Then you sorn your vehicle at the end of May 2027 and then retax in June 2027 for another £1 until end of May 2028 - two lots of £1 tax to last 23 months :)
