Toilet with waste tank under the van?

Are there any toilets that have a separate waste tank under the van and not a cassette connected directly to the toilet?

A few years back I visited Canada and hired a small RV which had a built in sewage tank underneath with a retractable hose to put down a drain. It was fine on campsites where each pitch seemed to have its own black water drain but it was useless for wild camping where the only emptying points tend to be public toilets.

I think some Laika vans have both systems installed, cassette & sewage tank with ability to swap between them - the Ecovip definitely did, which is one of the things which really appealed to me about that particular van.

Don't know about Laika's more more modern vans though.

Yes but not many
Laika , Hymer , Burstner have done a few and nearly all American rv's
I have had both systems a black tank and cassette toilets and have to say cassette toilets are a complete waste of time and IMO useless in a motorhome, they are for caravans and campers .

Not sure why you say this ? Surely with a tank I'd have to take my van to an emptying place whereas with a cassette I can take that to an emptying place ?

We have hired RV's in North America and all have had built in tanks, and pretty much every campsite has drains to suit. In Europe there's not so many campsites can handle it.

Not always possible to MT an onboard toilet

Yes every bloody day !
Motorhomes are built for site use as that's where most will be.
With a tank it's a fortnight so wilding is easy .

For a variety of reasons
Positioning the MoHo
Disposal point too high
Too much in one go (yes pun intended)
and more I suggest

CC needs to remember that others think and "motorhome" differently from him.
He likes his system FINE

We wild a lot (over 90% last summer) but manage perfectly well with 1 cassette.
I do have a reserve "Black tank".... (about 2 cassettes worth)
This was purchased this April and so far it has not been used it so far for black waste.
BUT it has been very handy for Grey Water

A friend has a Concord with a tank he had a choice when he purchased it new. He said he's wished he had a cassette many times for ease of emptying

If I understand you correctly you're saying it's easier to take a vehicle to an emptying place than a cassette ?
You must be driving one of these shape changing , sideways driving vehicles

You can get by for a long time on a 20L cassette if you only use the toilet for number twos, with the occasional number 1 and flush water ensuring the contents remain reasonably liquid to aid emptying. For everyday number ones a wee bucket with a lid, emptied discreetly in a bush or hedgerow. I'm not talking about aires here, but out in the sticks in the middle of nowhere.

My experience with long term wild camping on the continent and carrying a spare cassette is that two adults could get by for 10 days before needing to empty. Of course it rarely comes to that as you empty whenever you get the chance. It does take a long time to produce 40 litres of poo!

Obvious by the responses that posters have their individual justifications for preferring
cassette over black tank and vice versa.

Myself it's the cassette, and although I wildcamp, the cassette only requires emptying
every 5 or 6 days, or even longer because I tend to frequent places near supermarket
facilities or cafes. The m/bike has to earn its keep so I have a topbox that easily
accommodates the bog, I nearly always welcome a ride out excuse, to a disposal
point.
I've at times been asked by wilding RV owners for where the nearest place might be to pump
out their black tank. Sometimes been reluctant to advise them because laying out hoses for
half an hour at some places would hardly be considered discreet! Certainly not as discreet
or practicle as a cassette would be.

LMAO
We have a motorhome
It's a new van with all the conveniences of modern life.
I don't do camping , we don't pee in buckets , bottles ,poo in bags , skulk about public toilets waiting to dump cassettes, in my world a cassette toilet is useless in a motorhome.
It's full in a day
Sure it's a real hardship weeing in a bucket.

What have you been eating to fill a 20L cassette in a day?

Well if you can fill a cassette in a day there's one thing we can be sure you're not full of :p
Sorry I just couldn't resist. :lol-061:

When I say I camp where possible near supermarket or cafe facilities,
I mean I use the facilities in the conventional way, that is, not for emptying
a cassette let alone skulking. But where I shop, or have a coffee!

Thanks for all the replies, i guess finding places to empty it would be the biggest downside, The main reason was for longer times between emptying, I guess you could part empty into a smaller container to give access to other waste sites, it would just mean a couple more trips back and forth to the waste area each time which could still be a good trade off for longer empty times.

Any info on what kind of toilets they use and what size waste pipes etc are used in these set ups?

Part emptying a black tank is not something I'd like to be doing, the usual is to empty black then flush throu with the grey, this takes quite a bit of 'fluid'.

No trouble for CC though he seems to be full of fluid, 20L at least'
that should be enough flush it through! lol

I'm convinced nobody bothers reading anything properly these days :)

Skip to 13:50 on this video to see how the loo system works.
I might very well be mistaken (I often am!), but does this van have a CHOICE of cassette or sewage tank or not?

I've never seen a system like that, at least no RV I've hired has had it.
It does seem the video is a bit simplified, as the tank would most likely be holding a lot more than a cassette, so it could still get a little messy.

Sorry I forgot

You know everything and your opinions are always better than others.
Are you related to the "dearly departed former member from Brittany" ?

Yes I think Laika did do that system, ours was a black tank and the van was supplied with a 50 litre waste container and hose if you couldn't get over a dump point .
The feckin waste pipe under the van did block up and it dumped all over me as I pulled it apart I got a face full and I was laying in it !!!
Karen was in stitches :lol-049::scared::cry:

One of the RV's we hired had a dodgy bayonet on the waste, it popped off once when being emptied, glad I was out of range of the splashback, cleaning up the mess to retrieve the hose was bad enough.
