What to take on a camp

We are new to the camper van camping, and have now got a T25. I plan to take my grand daughters (10yrs / 7yrs / 5yrs) away for a week to Lochness, if the summer ever comes. I would like some information / handy tips on what to take with us. I know we will need plenty of "calm me down tablets", but any other ideas would be appreciated. Forgot to mention, we do have a drive away awing.
Cheers,
Jim.

We have 2 kids 7 and 2. Make sure you are prepared to stop often, they do not find the scenary that interesting and when they are bored they can make your life hell :) Also take things for them to do whilst driving.
When stopped plenty of games, swing ball is always a good one.

We bought 2 hand rechargable torches from pound land, kids love torches and these don't need batterys :)

Story CD's or tapes are also a good bet.

2 Wind break, big old blanket you can put on the ground, waterproof ground sheet, makes eating simplz. Wind breaks also make a nice privacy area to stick a toilet outside.

Yep its all about the kids, but if they are happy then we find the rest is easy :D

Grandchildren

When we took our grandchildren travelling we always took plenty of games and books, try your local charity shops for games then you can change the ones you keep in the van regularly.
We also took a portable dvd player for longer trips but this was not in our motorhome, you can get dvd,s off E Bay for 99p and then keep rotating them.

I agree that Midges are a big problem, they almost ruined our holiday last year.
I asked in Inverness how best to deal with them only to be told "ye just have to get use to them"
Suggest you save this site which will be up and running again when the season starts.

Midge Forecast : forecast

I will only return to the highlands when there is a low midge forcast.

When the stepkids were younger (life was much more simple-no grumpy teenagers!) anyway, we would do nature spotting, name this tree, whats that bird that sort of thing. Prizes (not always sweets-get to pick what we do next sort of thing) for the one who found X tree etc. Got them interested in nature and aware of what is around them.

Also scrapbooks? we didn't do this but as my friend in final preps of her families Grand Tour of Europe (her campervan is parked up on my driveway) she is going to do this with her two. Great thing for scrapbooks- Polariod Pogo printer, tiny little thing, prints 2"x3" pictures, sticky backed, ideal for scrap books-great for kids of all ages! we have them stuck everywhere!
Printer £23 at amazon, prints work out at 7p each. You'll need power as battery life crap.

Kite flying? stone skimming? Poo Sticks? Rounders-you'll need collie to do the out field-well thats what we used-our Sweep.

The best thing of all just letting the kids "off", we love camping for that very reason, so do/did my stepkids. Safe places campsites-everyone keeps a look out for the kids, allowed to wander as long as they stay within campsite come back when you are hungery. Freedom most kids jsut don't get these days.

If you do the freedom method-you'll not be needing "calm me down tablets". Up early and staying up late, fresh air and exercise-sorted!

First camp !!?

Mmm,not quite sure what your asking ?if its 'about the kids' then the obvious is to ask them ?they usually have those 'hand held gizmo's ' etc, also ball, kite or frizby ?.If its what should YOU take ?
dunno what your van has or what you expect from 'camping out' ,have you room for a 'barby' of some kind ? firelighters, water, jump starter or gennie or even a solar panel ?(no you dont really need that )
Make sure your 'van ' is ready and everything tip/top,dont forget a map and perhaps do some research on the internet of where you want to visit(google earth is good),stop off and get your supplies and sweets etc before finding your loverly spot, otherwise you'll be driving again to please everyone, make a check list,of what you think you need, essentials or not.

Other ideas

Make sure they all have all weather gear.

We made a thing about getting my stepson boots, wateproof coat and his own backpack, if nothing else waterproof coat and a little backpack, so they carry thier own lunch and anything else they want to take out for the day-you'll be surprise at what they'll want to take with them!

You just have to go monster spotting!

Great info all, especially about the midgies, have experienced them before in our tent. We just covered up our mouth and nose and the wife sprayed the inside of the tent with hair spray, boy did that stiffen their wings. Cream sounds a better idea. :)
