I've been looking at second hand larger M/Homes again as we might be going to look at old Plan A of living in one for a few months again.

What are the disadvantages or something like a whopping great tag axle HYMER B694, apart from supermarket parking? This an old 1994 model.

Depends on how well it's been looked after. Nice, simple engines.
My Brother in Law and his pal bought similar N reg modles.
Both had to be re floored, about their 10th birthday... A coincidence?

Upside..? You can bring a piano to meets.
Downside.. ? You will bring piano to meets. And you'll lose some of the
Flexibility to camp anywhere you fancy,on a whim.
You could plonk Percy anywhere.

We’ve had two 9m tag axles, no problems at all but you just need to plan a little more in advance and not go down lanes if your not sure. If you can read a map and not rely on Sat Nav it helps.

Hymer B694 disadvantages?

We recently bought a 92 Hymer and were very happy with overall. The main things to be aware of are the lack of traction from a vehicle which has front wheel drive and powered by a Fiat Ducato engine of only 2500cc.
It is not a 'sport' machine which we can deal with and being a diesel it is quite reasonable on fuel.
Our biggest cost and disappointment has been the gearbox. It is shocking that Fiat can turn these out.
Ours had been replaced and the previous one rebuilt as well. We now have a further problem with 5 th gear which has failed.
The gearbox parts are obselete and the gearboxes are the same.
Not a good situation to be in.
Ours has been off the road since late July, the gears had to be made in Italy and it will not be ready for another few weeks.
Other than that it is a substantial van with quality fittings.
Good luck, regards, Growlie

I had a B694 Hymer tag axle 2,8 Turbo diesel for about 10 years, right hand drive, great vehicle no major problems with it except it needed a new clutch in Portugal one trip. we got 30 MPG easily from it, it was not heavy on tyres as some seem to think , great van for full timing, although we weren't full time we spent a lot of time in it, at the time we did not have a car so we went everywhere in the van [ Greece, Norway Spain Portugal Germany etc] and never had a problem parking or getting anywhere in it, you soon get used to the size and drive it like any other vehicle, MOT s need a garage that can lift the 4.5 tonnes it weighs , but my local garage used to do the MOTs and their lift was rated at 3.5 tonnes , if you want one I would say go for it, have fun.

We have a 1994 Hymer 694 and have no more problems with it than any other  good luck with your hunt

Good luck in the hunt Sharon,my b544 is a 1995 great reliable German (old) build.i imho German built on older is the only way to go

We didn't go for the Hymer but are seriously considering the Swift Royale Ensign SE 630. Waiting to see what he offers for our little T4 in px.

I really like the layout in that swift, have you thought of selling the T4 privately as they have a big following so should sell easily

Funnily enough we saw a couple of friends in the pub on the way home who might be tempted. It depends what he offers us.

The Swift looks as if it has an Irish plate on it (and IRL sticker) I don't know but would it need changing to a UK one?

Sharon is this a plan to carry more books.

Thanks *****, despite the fact that Phill can drive anything he wasn't too keen on the LHD. Why do they always advertise as RHD on eBay when they're not???

I had looked at that Burstner on eBay, looks nice.
Our biggest issue is location. We only get Sunday afternoons off. Having discovered the eBay trader with the Hymer is only a few miles away from us we were able to dash across between opening hours on a Saturday afternoon. We looked at 5 vans & are waiting for him to us a PX price for our T4 against the Swift.

Nice van, although it seems to have a split personality, Irish plates and a Welsh Dragon on the front lol
