Overcab Bed

Anybody have any thoughts on a MH that only has an overcab bed please? We are currently looking at a Detheleffs globebus i5 which only has an overcab bed and it doesn't look particularly comfortable to me, especially if you wanted to sit up and read. Or am I missing the point? We have been used to a Chausson with a fixed rear transverse bed and that suited us fine.

Only use mine for storage now, pain in the ass getting up for a pee, ladder rungs sharp when barefoot, bumped my head when sitting up too quick, only really used if I have a travel buddy.

Our thoughts are exactly as above, not keen on fixed bed either, waste of space, u shaped rear lounge for us that we sleep in....maja

No way

For sleeping (which is what you ask)

Prefer low Profile anyway

OK if you see a good MH in which everything else suits Then it is useful storage.

We use MH all summer so WE only considered Fixed bed as well
We put a cover on the bed in the day and so we use the area for a whole host of items.
Indeed it is also used to put some items on when cooking as it is right by the kitchen

Just our preference !

Our first van had over cab bed, in practice after a couple of trips we stopped using it, for us not enough space and as stated above going to the loo in the night was a bind. Since then always gon for fixed bed, we don't see it as a waste of space may be we are lazy the thought of making a bed up nooooo 😝

If you have been used to a fixed bed I think it may be difficult to adjust to an overcab bed.We have the option of a rear fixed transverse bed or the overcab and only use the latter when the granddaughter comes with us even though it is comfortable. We have friends who had a 6m A class and had to use the overcab bed as there was no alternative,it was fine until they both developed mobility problems, they finished up selling it and replacing with a fixed bed model.

We use the over cab in our Hymer all the time. It is large and comfortable :) Getting in/out gets easier/quicker with practice. We don't even bother with the ladder now :D

Overhead bed may be ok if very young, but in any vans iv seen most folk use them for storage.
I would never buy a van with this as it will also eat fuel due to bulk pushing into wind.

I brought my MH with the intention of using the overcab bed but just found it too difficult to get in and out,and claustrophobic with the ceiling being only a foot from my face...Its now storage.

We use the over cab in our Dethleffs all the time, it's a full size double (4' 6") with a memory foam mattress. The previous owner had a ladder made with flat steps that is a lot more forgiving on the feet. Only downside is the height, we've both banged our heads a couple of times but you soon remember it's there. We prefer to read in the lounge where we can get our feet up and the bed is always ready for that late arrival when wilding. Our's is small van though, only 5m long.
Regards,
Del

Thanks for your comments - what I should have added was that I was referring to a pull-down type bed, such as the Hymers have. My first camper did have a fixed over-cab bed, and we also only used it for storage.

Might be worth a PM to Leelinda on this forum.

They have a Pilote with a pull down bed, and Lee is 6" 7', they cope pretty well. They are also very approachable/helpful.

Hi El'

I have a Weinsberg Komet with a pull down double bed, over cab. Would not change it for the world.

No need for painful ladders and affords a good 3ft of headroom.

Sorry, Mrs R had keyboard set on azerty, now on qwerty, I'll start again......lol.

El-V have you given thought to an A-class MH with pull down bed, when in down position, can offer more head height room?

Bloody iPads!

Yes, the Detheleffs that I mentioned is an 'A' class. It has become apparent during our search that an 'A' class pull-down bed is only over the driver and passenger seats, therefore leaving the salon area free and still usable. Whereas a low profile pull-down takes up the whole of the salon/living space, so if one of you wants to go to bed, you both have to go as there is nowhere else to sit.

Morning bud. Personally, the idea of wild camping is just jump in and go, easy life kinda thing. I reckon having a pull down bed to make up every night is just a complication I don't need. Different if you need the space or if there's a big gang of you I suppose, but I would go for fixed bed every time!:sleep-027::sleep-040::sleep-027::sleep-040:

A lot of the pull down beds can be left made up, or so I believe. So making the bed up is a 2 second job. ie. pull it down.

I could be wrong though.

Our a class rapido has a fixed at the back and also a pull down over the dash/seats, we fold the seats forward, drop the bed down, clip the ladder in and climb in, only use the ladder so I don't wreck the foam in the settee or mark the leather, can't remember the exact dimensions but it's massive, both of us can sleep up there no problems. I would say it's more comfortable than the fixed as the fixed bed has rounded corners and your feet can find there way out from under the duvet .Andy

Yeah but Lee's feet stick out the passenger window, was tempted to tickle them on the Wheel trip
