I put down post 1.....because there will be a post 2 about a different topic.

GAS...............topic 1.

Having read through all (if I found all) topics on gas on this site and others..going back to 2008..I am confused....but wish someone would TELL me what to do...

Am I correct in the following statements and what to do about it.

I have a camper, which I have spent no less that 2 to 3 grand a year to keep on the road. (not including tax and mot and insurance) Rust. .opposite the sea, and being ripped off by workshops seems to be the main cause. along with being a female, and charged 75 pounds to change a fuse. I wish to use this van for a long overseas trip, to Europe, to see if I like mostly living in a van. My current van would not be suitable for long term. But I will do it , to help me make up my mind what sort of van I would need and what my future hold for me.

I am trying hard to go to Europe...........with many problems to solve. one being gas. Having read many threads am I correct in my summing up, from the many many thread I have read in the last 2 months

You can buy gas bottles for each country you are in. You also need the adaptor for each country you visit. You might also have to change the rubber hose in your van along with the regulator. These bottles tend to be in the 11kg bracket. There is a woman now travelling with 6kg bottles and cant find exchanges. My bottles are 3.9 kg. the red bottle call propane, and I have two of them

QUESTION 1..............iS IT TRUE THAT IN FRANCE , SPAIN AND PORTUGAL THERE IS NOT BOTTLES 3.9 KG which I can exchange and get a regulator for?

question 2.. I read that there is glow lite, auto gas and gas it available. or something like that..............once again these tend to be 11kg bottles............my locker only hold 2x 3.9kg of propane .........so this is out of the question.? locker size is 29cm across by 49 cm height. by 48 depth.........No way can I hold a 11 or 6 kg bottle,
Am I correct my locker will not hold either of these 3 companies bottles.

Question 3....If I was able to to do question2...........Where would the out filler be? I don't have one of those square boxes of a motor home. ......I have a van conversion? The gas bottles are by the sliding door. There isn't space to have an outside filler ,Or is there? I have a fiat ducatto. e 360 I thing which is a mwb.

Question 4. Underslung ....More money.............can take out to new van if required to have recycle......I have a mwb, fiat ducatto,........do I have the space, after all I have fresh water. waste water, pump, spare wheel, underneath the van. Im sure I have a lot more which I don't know about. Could it hold the 11 kg bottle which autogas, gas it, and the one one says

Not to frequent mentioned is something call calor gas...spelt with a z ........ Some form of conversion...............nothing else on it.

Can someone please email me here or privately (much better for me in case I have more questions, and don't wish to bore the community).

can you help me get through this stage so I can get onto the next stage of security........

Although expensive, Campinggaz is very easy and available in many places. May be worth considering for a one off trip before you know what type of van you'll get. Not a good option for the long term but does mean you don't have to think about it.

hi. it might be for ease to you .that you kit yourself out with two 907 camping gas bottles . these can be exchanged in every country you are likely to go to. get a regulator as well . these arent cheap to exchange . but if you are limited in space it might be the best way .i used to use a vw t2 . they really were the best bottles for that size van .
if you have more space then wait till you get to france . and just leave home with only one of your bottles . might be cheaper in france to get the bottles .
mind look on ebay or possibly your local recycling center ,they sometimes sell gas bottles for a back hand fiver . wink wink .
in spain the cheapest bottled gas is a spanish bottle but if you dont have room camping gas is all over the place . every village someone sells it .
if i was you camping gas is the way .
getting refillable bottles isnt really worth the cost i dare say you dont use alot of gas anyway .

well it looks like all us well traveled ones agree on that . camping gas it is . hee hee .

How long are you going to Europe for and at what time of year. Are you using gas for just fridge and cooking or for room and water heating for bathing. A weeks fridge and cooking you can do on Gaz,
a fortnight on a 3.9kg so in summer you can maybe do a month on two. Longer and you would need to get a local cylinder and regulator.

Get an external BBQ point fitted and carry a flexible pipe with the BBQ fitting on one end and nothing on the other end.

Pick up a local bottle and regulator, connect it and you will be fine.

problem with using a bbq point is where to carry the bottle and its no good for wild or street parking . certainly in spain and portugal its a move me on quick sign . if using campsites then its not a problem .
i sometimes used a uk bottle and had a long gas hose and had a bottle outside the sliding door .
at one time i think almost all vw conversions you left the bottle outside . but that was before the war .ha ha .
on some the cooker was on the opening side doors with some splitscreen vans .
how times have changed .

well it looks like all us well traveled ones agree on that . camping gas it is . hee hee .

Thats about as near to getting a concensus as you'll ever get , normally its like herding cats

Winter

Yes can't beat Camping Gaz for availability. But, I'm going to install a coin meter on the regulator.
WOULD LIKE TO TRY THIS WINTER AWAY FROM THE RAIN, 3 TO 4 MONTHS IN EUROPE. SPAIN. JUST AS A TRIAL TO SEE IF I LIKE FULL TIME LIVINGING..THEN OF COURSE I UNDERSTAND I WOULD HAVE TO UPGRADE TO A VAN AND ALL SUNDRIES. wAS JUST TRYING TO CUT THE COST ...OF INVESTING IN MY CURENT VAN ABOUT 3 GRAND......WITH ALARM AND SORTS........ JUST FOR A TRIAL.....ABVIOUSLY IF I LIKE TI I WOULD INVEST THE FUTURE CARAVAN..........

Not done Spain but gaz would cost you a fortune for 4 months. Just get a local bottle and reg.

You could use a gaz for the trip down and save it for emergency as they are universal. It would not add much weight or take up much space

Camping gaz it is

THANK YOU ALL FOR SOLVING ONE OF MY PROBLEMS. I WILL CONTACT THE PERSON THE 2ND THREAD RECOMMENDED WHICH SHOULD SOLVE MY NEEDS. cAMPING GAZ IT IS, EVEN IF MORE EXPENSIVE......BUT SHOULD BE AVAILABLE IN MY SIZE...( wish I was that size in PHYSICAL size)......TO GIVE ME TIME TO THINK ABOUT WHAT I NEED IN MY FUTURE VAN , WHITHOUT GOING THROUGH THE EXPENSE OF AN UNDER SLUNG TANK IN MY CURRENT VAN. MMMMM ESPECIALLY THE LAST 3 YEARS I HAVE HAD PLATEING? WELDING? OR SOMETHING TO THE UNDERNEATH AND ENGINE AREA CAUSE OF IT ???? ROTTING AWAY, CAUSE OF THE SEA SALT. I HAVE IMAGES OF MY NEW UNDERSUNG 11 KG BOTTLE, LEFT ON DOVER FERRY.......WHILE IM HAPPY TOURNING IN FRANCE NOT KNOWING I HAVE LEFT MY BOTTLE BEHIND......

ideally if staying mainly in spain and if you have a bit of space chat to a gas truck driver . they usually will let you have a bottle and not ask too many questions . 10 -25 euro deposit and about 17 euro for gas . 12kg . regs available in super markets or in village hardware shops .repsol do an adaptor you screw in a camping gas reg . i use one myself .

just spoke to viv . she is going to get two camping gas 907 bottles and possibly a spanish bottle . but we shall probably meet up.on the med . any problems she can get in touch and we can sort her out . see you soon .

As VWALAN says go with your camping gaz bottles , when i went over if you wanted to change over and buy spanish gas bottles they insisted you had a gas inspection on your van, about £120 at the time,YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO THIS !!! , i picked up a bottle and regulator at a market (car boot ) just outside benidorm , once you have a bottle you can exchange it at the local gas supplier without question , swop regulator ,connect bottle and your away ,good luck,Shawbags.

Small van? Going gasless might be the solution;

Wallas diesel hob, the top plate doubles as a space heater.
Compressor fridge, with solar panel/battery set up, a few calcs. required to match the capacities with expected useage.

The Wallas is pricey, but does double duty, a seperate gas space heater and stove wouldn't be that much cheaper.
No gas locker needed. Definately a safer installation.
