EU Pet Passports no longer valid for UK residents

I have just heard back from my French vet and they are able to administer the 3 year rabies jab when we visit next.

My sister will be returning in a week from their short jaunt down to their house and we will see if she has any difficulty at the border. When she left UK it was simply passports as before, they weren’t stopped for any further processing.

This from Spanish authorities.not sent to me but from ahc site

That's part of the big question. The whole controversy is about whether passports already held can, or can not, be used going forward. It's clear that new passports can only be issued to people whose main residence is in the EU. But for those of us whose dogs already have passports (either obtained by us in the EU, or already held on import of the dog) there are still arguments going on about whether they are valid. The APHA briefing note said they aren't, but APHA don't have jurisdiction in EU legislation anyway. Both the French and Spanish governments say they are valid - I have a copy of the French equivalent of the page that @Drover posted above, it's on my phone though so I'll post it later.

But this is what the whole argument is all about.

Sidneys passport was issued to us in greece! It has our UK address in it, he didnt have a passport before we rescued him and im confident we will be ble to use it for our trip at the end of June, although as a backup we will get a cheap AHC as a just in case option being turned away at the last minute is a PIA

This is a letter to the French authorities, and their reply.

A friend of mine also has a Greek rescue dog, and her passport issued in Greece has a Greek address on it put there by her local friendly vet.

Ah sorry, you imported Sidney into the UK not the rescue. It was the way I read it. I made a presumption.

That’s one of the letters I referenced above in the Fun thread. There’s also a similar letter from the Spanish authorities.

It looks like common sense at the French and Spanish borders is prevailing and that PP’s obtained in the EU prior to April 22nd 2026 will be honoured as valid for entering the EU. As long as the carriers are aware of this. We travel by Brittany Ferries and they seem to know. Of course once this PP s full we won’t be able to get a new one, but the UK version should be available soon.

New rules for pet passports for UK travellers
Further to the recent APHA communications regarding changes to pet passports, authorities have confirmed that EU pet passports issued to British residents before 22 April 2026 remain valid for travel into the EU and can still be used. EU vets are not permitted to issue EU pet passports to non-EU residents after 22 April 2026. British residents who do not have an older, valid EU passport must use a single-use Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by a GB vet.

This is indeed good news, and the right decision, I was pretty sure sure this is down to some legal loophole and the carriers have realised there could soon be a big payment for someone who had a valid pet passport and have been denied travelling with the carrier

Possibly but don't think the other ferry companies haven't adopted this policy?
I may find out quite soon
