Hi All,
Met a chap a few years ago, who had taken his Merc Van to SA and more countries around by shipping it.

Any one on here done similar?

A few years ago I would have said good idea. South Africa now has a number of the Worlds most dangerous Cities, the violence is out of control. There were companies who organised camping trips around the country, you could investigate them. It is such a shame as it is a beautiful country with a variety of natural wonders. I was lucky enough to see some of it and some of Zimbabwe before it was devastated by the change of government.

Thanks to all so far who have responded.
While in India at a restaurant, we bumped into a very pleasant young lady from Cape Horn, SA who regularly wild camps in and around the country.
Gave the impression all oK with caution in some areas as you are suggesting.
Shall do more reading, and update as we go o along.

Crime locations

Violent crime can take place anywhere, including in tourist destinations and transport hubs. Most violent crimes occur in townships located on the outskirts of major cities, central business districts or in isolated areas. The threat is higher when it is dark.

There have been violent incidents involving tourists at popular tourist locations. There are usually security personnel in the main tourist areas who can assist tourists. However, policing and security can be limited, so always be cautious.

Avoid isolated beaches and picnic spots. Do not walk alone in remote areas or on beaches when deserted, especially when it is dark.

My cousin was in a hotel on the garden route when he was shot with 4 bullets from a 9mm handgun, he is alive because he killed his attacker!
My uncle always used to say "it's handy living on the same road as a police station, they get here quicker"

Mali is bad. Don't think of going there. The french government ordered all its citizens to leave. This was yesterday.
Between Western Sahara and Nigeria it's all bad to be fair, Algeria was out of bounds at the time I did the trip.

It would be a good idea to fit a 'blaster' to your van, the best anti hijacking device invented

I was surprised to learn last night that my cousin is back in RSA and visiting Kruger National Park.

Hi Coilnm, wow what an adventure, and in a Ford - chuckle. You certainly enjoy writing up your exploits, impressed.
With what's happening in UK at present then SA ain't so bad, or is it?

So, would you do it today?
Did you have difficulties getting food, fuel, gas?
