Compressor fridge question

As ever I'm looking at vans for sale, and one of them has a Thetford T2138 12V Slimline Compressor fridge as standard.

Power Consumption
42.0 Ah/24h (average ampere usage)

How would that fare when wild camping in winter, or even summer, for that matter? What sort of kit would you need, even if you drove every day?

Too technical for me Kev, but my compressor fridge works absolutely fine in high temperatures and uses naff all battery power.

Since fitting I only use gas for hot water and hearing (and the heating goes electric this week) and I’ve never replaced a gas bottle since.

I have a 230v small fridge and it only uses a qtr of a amp and hr, works with a smart soft start inverter, from what i read the 12v units burn more power than a 230v, and our very expensive.

With my limited knowledge, it would seem to me that if its using 42ah per 24 hrs and it has a single 105ah battery, if you add in say 20ah of usage for lights, TV, laptops etc your battery would be in a dangerously low state of charge within 24 hours if there is no method of charging. As I am sure you know with lead batteries you can only really count half the rated AH as usable.

IF it uses 42AH per day (sounds on the heavy side for a compressor) Kev it's going to use the majority of the available power of an 105AH Battery given that you can discharge by 70% so it depends what else you are running as well, of course the solar will contribute and if you drove every day it wouldn't be too much of a problem.

I would say though that 105AH is pretty small storage for a Motorhome these days though so if it was mine I would at least double that.

But you know what the real answer is... 😊

Sounds about right Barry, but it's an AGM battery which I believe you can discharge by 70-80%?

If I was going compressor and Diesel heating I would say it justifies putting Lithium in and all the bits and pieces with it. I certainly wouldn't do it with a single 105ah AGM unless you are hopping from site to site. 300ah lithium and matching solar with a B2B would be the minimum worth putting in I would think if you want to relax about it. Even then a few nights would be your limit in winter I reckon but you move on a lot Kev so a good B2B charger would fettle that probably.

Chance would be a fine thing Rob.

That image will stay in my mind for the rest of the day ... :ROFLMAO: 'Well, thank you very much; last time I play the tart for you, Jerry' as Margot so famously said ... :ROFLMAO:

She was superb in that Roll Steve, that and As Time Goes By are two brilliant sitcoms, and A Fine Romance was another for Judi.

I've been looking at new and used vans for years, and very few tick all the boxes. Some tick hardly any due to our needs, the latest good find ticks all but one, no wardrobe of any size for me frocks.

It was Penelope Keith, Kev, opposite Paul Eddington ...

As for the frocks; I don't worry - they spend most of the time on the floor, especially at weekends when there's 2 of us fighting for them ... A must have for me is a full length mirror so that I can check whether my seams are straight before leaving the M/Home. Eveything else is mere detail ... :ROFLMAO:
