The New Year seems like a good time for our annual campervan rant
😀
.
Over the festive period we have seen around 50 campervans an evening staying in the car park which should equate to around £250pd in our donation boxes and online stripe account. Unfortunately the average amount collected has been just under £60 per day - so less than 25% of campervans actually paying. We always thought £5 was a fair price for staying in a beautiful location with 24/7 toilets and showers so we would like to remind everyone politely that it would be great if people actually donated.
We also continue in the late evening when staff have gone home to have a challenge with campervans using us as a dumping ground for bags and bags of general waste. We would politely request that campervans stop doing this as it incurs a large extra cost on our business.
We also provide a waste disposal service for campervans which again seems to be getting widely abused. We charge (what we think is reasonable) £5 per person for disposing of waste. On New Years Eve staff witnessed 8 different vans sharing the same key among themselves to avoid the charge. When staff attempted to suggest individual payment should be made they were not very politely told to get lost.
While we really appreciate the many great and respectful campervan owners who come and stay and spend money on the mountain we seem to have managed to attract an ever growing clientele of campervan owners who have absolutely no respect for the place.
Last time we shared a similar post to this we saw a dramatic improvement in the behavior of campervan users for a number of months, we are hopeful that the same can happen again and that the current informal arrangement we have can continue.
P.S We are not interested in putting up car park entry barriers, having staff monitoring behavior 24hrs a day and collecting money from each visitor, we are too busy trying to run a ski center. We just want a mutually beneficial, respectful arrangement with campervan owners
😀

I've stayed there many times and always paid, it's a privilege to stay there and watch the Mountain Hares and Ptarmigan.

I really don't get how people can be so selfish and downright tight!
When places ban MHs how many times do we hear "I will take my money where we are welcome" It would seem more than 75% do take their money elsewhere anyway even when they are welcome.
As I have suspected for a long time the majority out there are nothing but tight fisted freeloaders that just want to take and contribute nothing.
This says it all really

Unfortunately I think you are right Chris and it's far more than the small minority we kid ourselves about.

I've never stopped there, but fiver per night + same to get rid of waste, a bloody bargain. As for the key sharing, and if I was staff, I would have lock off the toilets. But of course, this affects the visitor that does pay.

Just before Christmas we went up to Beamish museum and normally we overnight in the pub carpark just outside the gates of Beamish and have a few beers and a meal. Only this time when we asked we were refused and told sorry no, nobody can stay anymore as we have had too many just taking the piss.

The trouble is (I would hope) nobody on here is likely to abuse this facility so its a case of how do you get this message across to the freeloading morons that are ultimately going to get places like this shut down. I'm temped to share it across some of these Facebook Motorhome sites that have sprung up in recent years. There are a fair few that are clearly aimed at free or cheap camping but my concern is by doing so it could make the problem worse simply by notifying yet more morons that this place exists.

Unfortunately they do Barry. I'll say no more for the sake of harmony on the forum! :(

No way of finding out but it would be good to know how long the individuals have been 'vanners'.
Not trying to demonised newbies but I suspect they are a larger percentage of non-payers. Also, I wonder what age group the individuals are.

Perhaps a ticketing system would work, given out at reception stating how many nights, toilet key issued, ticket HAS to be placed where it is readable, to be policed by other camper owners who have paid, basically, self policed.

What do you think?

As much as I hate Parking Charge Notices (I hate them because many seem to be applied in devious ways) This is one such case where the sineage should be made clear. Something like £5 per night if you pay up front, or £50 PCN in the next post if you don't. AND apply that strictly.

I would suggest an honest box with a compulsory charge rather than a contribution. Payment to be left in an envelope with the vehicle registration written on it and a CCTV camera recording registrations as the vehicles drive in.

Trouble is Terry they did state that they don't wish to tie staff up with the administration.

Was that the Shepherd and Shepherdess Inn Chris?
We stayed at the Black Horse not far from Beamish, free if you have a meal.
We also stayed in a large carpark nearby which was peaceful and surrounded by woodland.
This was in October.

I posted this exact problem a few years ago. It seems nothing has changed.
It’s not just newbies as this place is popular with the #vanlife crowd at this time of year. That’s who I suspect we’re key sharing.
The staff are so friendly and welcoming it shame the majority are spoiling it for us the minority yet again.

I get the impression from the opening post that they are pretty laid back about it all and don't want the hassle of policing it but yes I would say some form of ticketing system might help and perhaps signage that a ticket must be purchased. Trouble is that will only work when reception is manned and putting in a pay and display machine would be costly. Freeloaders will see a donation box and just think bollocks to that.

Would it be worth contacting them with a link to this thread does anyone think? On the one hand it will show us sensible motorhomers are supporting them and it might give them some pointers as to how to solve the problem?

Yes they do that at other places Barry unfortunately, but I thought that an envelope with the registration as proof of payment might encourage it. Perhaps maybe that the signage would indicate that if the payment has to be collected by a warden then the price doubles.

Of course none of this would work in reality, it's human nature to save a few quid and sod the consequences. I'm just chucking stuff in the mix! :(

It was, which was a shame as I was looking forward to their mixed grill. We went on to the Black Horse, hopefully that one doesn't get spoiled.
