We will shortly be getting a tow ball mounted bike rack for our 2 EBikes however I am in the market for a good, durable cover for the bikes when they are on the rack and in transit.

Can anyone out there recommend a cover that you have used?

Hi Graham,

We bought a [German] Hindeman Bike Cover for our 2 ebikes. The advantage for loading is that the back is open, so no scrambling to reach round the back and fasten velcro strips to keep out the weather; the disadvantage is that water can get thrown up into the elasticated bottom of the cover. Germn customers have commented on this and say the solution is to make a couple of snall holes in the bottom area for the water to drain away.

Basically, you put the cover on from the front of the bikes as you look at them on the rack, and then draw the elasticated portions around the wheels and over the handlebars. We use a 2 step stool and the Leifheit Extending Cleaning Pole to hook the Covers over the handlebars [the bikes sit just under the roofline so are 2m up in the air]

As you've probably found, most bike covers for motorhomes are designed for use with a rack on the rear wall of the van, which means a large gap at the back.
Having read reviews about how flimsy some of the alternatives were, I eventually bought this one
It has survived frequent use, including two trips to France and Spain, no rips or other damage.

My mate used to have one he got from Taylormade (the company that make the windscreen covers) - it was very expensive, and very sturdy. In fact it was too sturdy, it weighed a lot and the thick material made it very difficult to handle and store. It was also far too large, but he may have ordered the wrong size!

We bought a Taylormade before the Hindeman Cover. The Taylormade is generously cut, BUT that leaves acres of surplus material to gather in on the elasticated threads, and reaching behind the bikes to secure the rear velcro straps is a great way to skin knuckles ... And very difficult to hook over handlebars/saddles at 2m height!

Thanks folks

What - if anything - did you chaps do when travelling in Italy or Spain regarding the red/white angled sign that is required there?

This thing...

We did use our cheap plastic one in Spain. The metal one you linked to is better, also reversible for the Italian version which is slightly different as they say on that page. In Italy the sign is apparently supposed to be metal, I don't know if that is enforced.
Also, when affixed the stripes are supposed to point down and towards the offside of the vehicle, which as you're driving on the right would be towards the centre of the road on the left. We saw a surprising number of hire vehicles with the sign the wrong way round!

Yes we are always amazed at home many MHers get it wrong...and even on ones registered and seen in Spain and Italy!

Oxford do a good robust and good value range for motorcycles

I've had 2 now from Bags4everything. You can choose gauge of material, colour, and they'll make you a custom one if you send measurements or call in.
They're in Ossett ,and last time I called in, as I was travelling north, they asked if I had an hour and a half to spare and made it while I went for brekky. They can make you one with a clear pouch for the warning sign if you request it.
Nice people and a quality product.

Good to know - thanks

Were they effective in stopping road crud from coming up from underneath when underway?

Yes,never had a problem with that, they have a draw cord around the bottom. I have a towbar mounted rack so quite close to the road surface.

Can you remember roughly how much they came in at?
No sorry, lost in the mists of time. But I do know they were competitive with the off the peg main brands. Best give them a ring,I'm sure they quoted me .

I had a cover for the bikes but it was almost impossible to get them over the top of the bikes as they were so high. I know im short At 5ft but even standing on a small step it was a shear fight to get it over the bikes

Hopefully I'll be a getting a tow bar mounted bike rack, so low level and easy to get a cover on.

We bought the bikes in the summer in an attempt to get my wife to do a bit more cycling...which has been mostly unsuccessful!

Mrs GMJ has a Pendleton in mint green

I bought an Ebco urban trapeze

There was no chance the wife would ride a bike now lolol so I stole the daughters hybrid cannondale and fitted a Bafang middrive motor + I put a 48v x 25 amp battery on it so it give me a good distance.
