There's a cold snap coming next week so here's a reminder to drain the water system on your van if you've not already done so

Nope! Mines off on Friday to my motorhome fixer as it has a leak from the Kitchen drainer pipe and a very small occasional one on one of the windows so ill need to keep water in it. I Don't think its going to be cold enough yet up here to worry about it.

Drain it, better safe than sorry, most places have a tap to put a few drops in to test.

Don't forget to drain the toilet flush tank if you have one.

Don't forget to drain the boiler.

Leave mixer taps open in the central position and lay the shower head on the tray, leave plugs out.

I bring the shower head indoors. I learned the hard way on that one years ago.

So long as the pipe can drain leave it the van in the kichen sink on a bit of paper or a cloth to stop scratching, one less thing to remember.

Yeah thats true really. Just give it a shake and leave it. It would be a disaster if it got left behind knowing how much Michelle loves to use it! Having said that it would cut down on me having to get bloody water all the time.

Don't forget the water traps on the drains - screen wash additive will prevent freezing and potential damage.

Will an open pipe be a problem if it freezes? it can expand along its length.

It might be a good idea to go for a drive on a bumpy road to get the last dregs to go lower after a drain down, then try again.

If you dont have solar then make sure you float charge all batteries including starter batt 24/7 if laying up the van, that way your eyes wont water and freeze at the price of new ones.

Good point. I checked my app the other day as I remembered I hadn't shut down the vans electrics / sargent system but all good so far. Still fully charged parked out front. Ill shut it down completely when it goes on the drive over winter. I'm not sure we will go away in this Christmas unless the weather suddenly looks great.

It might be a good idea to go for a drive on a bumpy road to get the last dregs to go lower after a drain down, then try again.

Solid pipes like copper etc wont freeze and split if there's an open end reasonably close, say within 6 feet. I've never seen a flexible plastic pipe such as the push fit pipes we see in houses or the blue and red stuff used in MHs split, there's enough give in the pipe wall to take up the expansion.

I had to fix a open copper vent pipe for c heating in a loft once, should not have burst but it did big style.
Think it may have been the swan neck at top stoped a plug of ice getting free.
Sys filled with 20ltrs of antifreeze sorted it after repair.
