The islands are stunning. If you are leaving from Stornoway, try to visit the HMY Iolaire memorial, which is a tad north of Stornoway, we stopped the night there before taking ferry the following day back to mainland.

Clachan sands beach on N Uist....a week ago..
Fine to overnight on dunes (owner asks for a donation)

Hosta beach on north Uist, a few days ago.....again, no problem parking in the Dunes (NOT the Machar), with land owners OK.

West Beach Berneray was our favourite and the dogs favourite. Spent three days there. With the farmer’s permission who was a proper heavy metal dude.

I can remember on a boys trip us turning up there in the dark in the noughties. Blowing a gale and pitch black, VW camper and a tent. We had no idea where we were. Woke up the next morning to sunshine and we were camped on the cliff above this wonderful beach. Fantastic place.

Cale, we stopped for two night at the East Beach, I did a couple of stealth evening trip over to the hostel to top up container with fresh water.

Looks wonderful. We are heading there in May. I'm a bit nervous with all the talk about ferry cancellations and having to book ahead (no access to standby lanes for motorhomes). Did you book your ferry well in advance?

I book mine moths in advance when possible. It’s easy on the CalMac website.

That's fine if you know your dates; unfortunately, our departure date is still pretty fluid. Ah well, if we don't get a ferry, it'll just be the mainland for us.

We have been known to book ferries the day before, that's outside of peak times however.

If you book online, you can change your sailing to any time or date through the online system, its very easy, we do it all the time.

A word of warning Bill, watch out for thieves wanting to nic you motor, awful up there!!

I booked the Arran ferry today for 1st May and it had already gone up £12 on yesterday when I was checking and limited availability. I always thought Cal Mac ferries were just a set price but apparently not so it might pay to book early.
