After reading on another forum of someone waking up in a French Service area to find an intruder inside the van, they checked and found damage to the driver side door just below the handle, prompting me to check mine.
And this is what I found: Rubber pushed back.....

Doesn't look much from the outside, similar on the pass side too.
Stripping it down shows how the metal was peeled back

A new reinforcing plate was fitted as repairing the damage

I haven't been broken into so either someone failed or more likely the previous owner had the attacks.
Plenty of YT vids on how to take the door apart, (But those push fitting that hold the door card on the earlier ones (hardboard) are a barsteward to refit.
Only doors with a key hole need protecting, ie drivers side, maybe rear on a PVC, but of course if on the continent then dumb burglars may well just go for the left side asa that's the side for LHD vans

If you fastened a bell to the straps, then it would ring if anyone tried to open the doors,
Alerting you and also let the scumbags know they have possibly woken you up

Worth doing Richard, unfortunately they don't care. They know the police won't come and if you try to intervene you'll probably get hurt.

Mind you, 4 large males living in my house and Tilly will be an extremely frightening prospect to deal with before long.

Two concerns.
a) This looks like they could open the door enough to cut the strap

b) Having a block emergency exit is not a goo idea.

I'd rather be robbed than roasted.

These are mainly used when we go out for the day or parked on my drive as the drivers door is in a blind spot we have a disc lock on the steering wheel, hook locks on the doors and the bright yellow straps it’s more about making the motorhome down the road looking easier to nick than ours, when we are sleeping in the van we don’t even lock the cab or the sliding door for intruders we have a baseball bat under my pillow at night plus 2 walking sticks that I’m not afraid to use. 🤣😂

If it's the report on OAL, the people had a dog which started barking, but the thief still managed to grab some stuff they had inadvertently left out before legging it.

I suggest you get a base ball and keep it in the van.

A baseball bat without a ball is clearly a weapon (even if you only intend to use it in self defense) and having it in the van indicates intent to use.
Should you use it you could face serious charges.

However, if you have a ball as well you can claim that you practice when you are on a suitable site and the bat was the first thing that you grabbed in panic..

Rather than a bell use a personal attack alarm. They keep sounding and are under a fiver.

I have the ball too.

We fitted extra security locks to all doors on our previous (stealth, panel) van after an attempted break in ( we were in the van, they legged it when interior lights came on and I sat up and shouted!) Think they thought it was a commercial van. Cost about £400 for extra locks to all doors but had to not use the side one when in the van as only locked externally. Made us feel safer though.

Happened to us at 1am in Sweden whilst waiting for a ferry to Germany, so our then brand new PVC was damaged. I've seen a vid on utube showing scumbag how it's done. Cab doors and rear doors now all chained, slide door has three interconnecting eyebolts with a pin in at night. Doors will just open a little, enough to activate the alarm. But i do need to have a deadlock fitted to the slide door that wr can lock in exit, rather bettet than the padlock i fitted. Having trouble finding anyone to do it because it's offside and the kithen unit comes across the door of course, and it's glazed, another issue they say.
