Connecting an inverter to 240 ring main

I fitted a change over switch so the van's plugs are EITHER inverter or EHU, mines a manual switch , but auto ones are available too.

I just phoned Daniel at S&G leisure.

Dropped the van off first thing, went back later in the day and all the outlets worked from the inverter he’d fitted.

Went to the pub on the way home, fancied more than 2 pints so stayed in the car park that night and boiled the mains kettle in the morning.

With enough amps and good solar in morning only use . I use a 1000w electric heater as quick free heat. And 240 kettle it's like being at home
Turn of alarm. Then
Prime cup, fill Kettle turn on , piss then then pour. Slurp slurp. Nice

Hi Hypo, been going over this post in my head deciding wether to get involved in the technical side or not. Do I butt out, you go ahead, botch it and someone gets killed. I didn't help and therefore partly responsible. OR try and assist and lead you into thinking that you're capable of doing a job that you're not, someone gets killed etc etc. So I guess the question is this:-
Are you going to have a crack at this project yourself regardless of what's posted here or have you made your mind up it's more involved than you thought and you're going to get a sparky to do it?
Now, I'm really sorry if this comes over as condescending or disrespectful but it was just the remark about the danger only exists if someone touches it that doesn't sit well with me❤️🤗

An interesting post.
FWIW, When I see a question about 240V Electrics and the question/suggestion posed is one that really truely is one that should not be even considered, my own posted advice is limited to "Don't do it" or words to that effect.
I don't want to make suggestions that could be misinterpreted by someone who, TBH, appears not be consider the real consequences, and feel responsible, even remotely for a bad situation occuring.

Exactly what struck me Merl!

Precisely David, BUT if that guy has already decided he's going to do the job no matter how many times people say dont do it and someone dies, then somehow in my head I feel a responsibility for not helping him do it correctly! Yup, massively over thinking it but cant help it mate. I guess subconsciously I'm looking for Gypo to say "I'm gonna get a sparky in" I can rest easy from then in.

Simply the wording I think Gypo. If you asked how to get 240V on your sockets when on EHU or inverter I think answers would be different

Pork.

You drink your own p-ss, dirty ferker. 😂

how about a short lead with 2 x 13amp plugs between those 2 sockets you spoke about
ANY lead with a 13a plug at each end would be a no no from me ...

Too much chance of someone plugging one end in and it leaving the other end live ...

It's why leads that can be plugged in live at one end have sockets that are protected from touching at the other .

I was once asked if I would consider becoming an instructor so as to pass on my knowledge, my reply was "no way", I've found in the past that it's very easy to overlook what seems bleeding obvious and have someone go off and do something stupid.

I completely understand 100% but if you see someone about to do something stupid do you not say anything for fear of saying something that is misunderstood and leaving you culpable?
This thread is getting worse, witzend has just suggested a lead with a 13A plug at each end, Jeeezus.

F F S, I’m not stupid and I wouldn’t just connect things up. I started the thread to get some knowledge as to whether it is possible to have the inverter connected to the vans 240 system.
Perhaps my original post wasn’t worded correctly and as said in a previous post.
Thanks all again for the input but rest assured I’m not going to just connect it up.
Yeoblades post offers a solution I see

The answer to adding an Inverter to existing AC wiring that is/can be powered by another AC Supply is very simple and comprises two words ... "Transfer Switch"
This may be built into some devices.
Any Inverter/Charger (e,g, the Victron Multiplus) will have that built in and run automatically.
Some Inverters have a AC Passthrough so if EHU is detected, it will switch to that input instead of the Inverter. So again they have an Automatic Transfer Switch (often called an "ATS")
You can get standalone ATS's, and standalone Manual Transfer Switches
It is simply a matter of choosing the right solution for the installation and the requirement (y)

But ... and it is a BIG But ... if the Transfer Switch is not wired up correctly it WILL lead to a BIG BANG and an expensive lesson.
I used to build and sell a variety of ATS's and they were quite popular, but everytime I sold one I worried about the buyer not connecting it up right (doesn't matter what instructions you provide, there are still people who won't read them).
When I relaunched my website, I didn't include them in the new store deliberately :)

Now people can only answer the question as posed. If it is badly worded, tough, you get the answer the question deserves.
