Yes, its been ongoing for some time now. Nearer the village of Druridge just a bit further down the coast than to our beloved camping spot.

Heard this was a long running issue, thought it had gone away with the other environmental issues. Dunno why they are still considering it when the burning of coal is now all but consigned to the history books
Common sense, people, common sense....🤔

Sad state to do this to the area with all the wildlife
this is what has put a stop to future meetings there I beleive

I personally feel that anyone in power who gives the go ahead to any project like this now or at any time in the future should never be in a position of power to begin with. There is surely no place in present civilized society for projects such as this...

It would be typical, even in this time of dire international crisis, for some lowlife to sneak this through planning while nobody's looking.
In fact it's the perfect time for lowlifes to sneak it through! 😝

Won't be the first time it's ever happened, unfortunately :cautious:

Roll on brave new world?

Well .... no Coal means no Coke .... which means no Steel production .... which means loss of many jobs ..... which means we have to import Steel .... Steel is a strategic resource.

The local people who are complaining about it are the same people who got motorhomes banned from their area at the South end of Druridge Bay a long time ago. They did not make a big fuss when Coal was mined a bit further North. You know the exact area I mean ..... it's the place that many of you say is the best Wildcamping Meet location of them all. Yes, that's right. The spot where you park up in the Country Park was an Opencast Mine Site.

2 wrongs don't make a right tho, it still wants stopping. Yes it might get put back afterwards, but there would be years of mess & traffic. Makes no sense, shut all the pits in the country then open some more in the nations beauty spots instead.....
End of the day, if govt.com smell a quick buck it'll probably get passed & never mind public opinion....

All I know of that area really is where Jim refers to, and yes it is one of the best places we have meets without a doubt. Stunning.

It does seem a very vast area of coastline though (what I have seen of it) so is there not room for both - tourism and the mine? I don't know what the lifespan of a coalmine up there would be or how much it would intrude, but if they returned it to a similar state that they did at the park, it would seem a worthwhile sacrifice, I presume they need the coal mined for a reason, and the North East could probably use the extra employment.

Coal is not just used to provide heat .
It's a feedstock for the chemical industry..
You know, that industry which makes medicines, dyes, plastics rubber , lubricants. A big local employer, too.
The oil won't be around for ever.

Quite correct young man and most of the byproducts (over 140) are produced when Coal is converted to Coke.

I also spent a couple of years on a Petrochemical refinery which produced Petrol, Diesel and Aviation Fuel from low grade Coal on an enormous scale. If the Oil did run out, the anti Coal people on here would have a dilemma. Walk everywhere or drive a vehicle on fuel derived from Coal. Thankfully the Oil will last for the few years we old fogies have left and we will never know if they are hypocrites or not. :ROFLMAO:

Back in the sixties there was an open cast site at Widdrington and as you went passed on the road you could see Big Jordan working which was massive dragline I often use to stop and watch it working, I have forgotten how many double decker buses could fit in the bucket

The reality is as part of granting permission. A site licence will specify time and be left in a better state than it is now revlandscaping provision for nature

Very true Andrew.

Close to me there has been a lot of gravel extraction recently. We now have a series of lakes, suitably landscaped and it looks far better than it ever did before. Sometimes they get it right.

I'll help you out with your predictive text problem Ken. ;)

It was Big Geordie. :giggle:

Correct. Oo but it were mucky round there back then! :)

You're dead right in everything you say about coal, Jim, and when the chips are down it might need to happen.

However, a better solution would be to reduce the world population and thus reduce the pressure of supply and demand?

Oh, hang on a mo - think covid-19 and its potential mutated successors might be cracking on with the job already... (y);)😂
