has anyone done wild camping with their kids, is it safe? and how easy is it to find free showers (eg on beaches) in normandy?

hi, i only park where i feel its safe, usually i like to cwtch up to other vans...safety in numbers!!! I did two weeks in france last year and im going agian next month and love it, my kids love it too. cant really comment on the free showers though, however i would be surprised if yo ucouldnt find some along the beach, I always threat to go swimming in the local pool if we get desperate! chill out and enjoy the wild thing, what will be will be and it will be great, something will pop up dont get too hung up on trying to plan it all!

Wild camping in France is very safe and easy, you can use Aires which are designated Camper Car stop overs, most free to use, and you can park up most anywhere in France for the night with no problems, Showers are available on lots of beaches or you can use Municipal Swimming Pools and the shower facilities very cheaply, get an Aires book ,lots available, try Googleing Vicarious Books as a starting point, you will love France, we all do.:dance:

Can't comment on France but even before we had a MH I used often to sleep in the car en route to Scotland - both alone and with the kids (it was a real adventure for them). Its common sense stuff really - I usually parked in set back laybys between trucks - you knew they were there for the night and that they were usually big burly guys who made me feel safer. If I wild camped elsewhere, I would usually find someone with kids or a couple parked up for the night and stay somewhere nearby.
Even now I feel fine in remote places as long as we have a mobile phone signal and plenty of battery - I also tend to park so I can make a speedy getaway if necessary

We 'did' the coastline in March/April this year from Calais to Le Havre, then up the coast June/July. I would say wildcamping is very safe there and people very friendly. Can't think of any beach showers off the top of my head but we stop at the odd campsite (ACSI/Camping Cheque) for showers etc when needed. There are plenty of Aires dotted along the coast to choose from, some are very popular and can be full up at weekends, maybe a bit less so by now. St Valery en Caux for example is very nicely located right by the sea and worth a visit.
