Wild campers to the rescue

We stayed in The Netherlands last week and by lucky chance were at the Camping Op Hoop van Zegen site alongside the Wild Camping Netherlands gathering. On the first morning, I came off my bike 25 miles away from the site, sustained a serious injury and ended up in hospital in Amsterdam. My wife was left stranded at the camp site as she doesn’t drive and we were struggling to work out how we would manage. Fortunately, the folks from the gathering stepped in wonderfully to help. They made her feel safe alone on the campsite, helped with moving our motorhome to a new pitch and, most importantly, provided transport to and from the hospital in Amsterdam. My wife tells me that nothing was too much trouble. Unfortunately, I’m unable to thank you in person but would like to pass on a very big thank you here for all your help.

We’re back in the UK now - I’m plotting how our next trip can make up for the 6 weeks that we missed this time round. It’ll give me something to do whilst getting back on my feet (and bike of course!).

The Dutch and the British to run Europe?

Any takers?

Dutch have nearest to British humour in my experience.

You had the good fortune to meet Jennie (Minisorella) who is regarded as one of the the nicest people on the forum, you were definitely in safe hands. The only danger Jane faced would have been if she allowed Jennie into your van, she would have cleaned it, hoovered, washed and folded all your clothing and polished from top to bottom. Not that your van needed it but she just can't help herself hence her avatar as The Good Life we call her Felicity.

Funny tyou should say that I had a lot of Dutch customers in France they loved Allo Allo and Dads Army love British crime series too like Morse , Agatha Christie.. they didn't get subtle jokes too often ( hardly surprising) but loved the slapstick stuff

Other than their English prowess, I found when I worked there a very forward optimistic set of folk

For English the Danes take some beating, speak better Inglish than us duz

Did you find the only coner in Holland. :lol-049::lol-049:If the police attended you will have made it into the local newspapers.

So pleased you made it back safely. Met your wife in the campsite reception on a crutches hunt! Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Pleased to see you have made it home safely. Lucky to have Jennie & Paul as 'neighbours'

It set us thinking about our situation as I can no longer drive our van but am still an insured driver so would probably be expected to be able to drive!

Jane is also concerned about the insurance position and being expected to drive. My view is that it is not reasonable or safe to expect someone with no experience of driving a motorhome or driving on the right to start driving just to keep the costs down for the insurance company. I’m already in dispute with my insurers about their service (or lack of) regarding this whole incident. If they don’t agree with my view, it will all be sent to the ombudsman to decide. Let me know if you’re interested in the outcome for your situation and I’ll post an update when the dust settles.

Jane’s crutches hunt ended in a medical supplies shop, again no thanks to the ”emergency assistance” service from the insurers. Another 40 euros to add to the travel insurance claim....

On the plus side, the vehicle recovery service have already agreed and authorised payment for my brother in law to fly over as relief driver and the ferry trip home. I’ll celebrate when I see the money in my account though.
