towbars

i have a mitsubishi caravanette and because of the overhang over the end of the chassis can not fit a store bought towbar does anyone know of a steel fabricator in the midlands that could do the job

think I do - ish.

I had a bike rack on the back of our kontiki which slid off leaving two box tubes fitted to the alco chasis. So I had that bit already.

I got the man to weld a bar/box section across welding trianglur bits to strengthen it, then to weld an ajustable plate to that - all i did is bolt a towbar on and wire my own electics and there easy!

He was in Nuneaton and dead reasonable.

i have just been reading a artical in a horse mag about tow bars. you should be aware that all towbars are now subject to the mot test so beware of fitting self made towbars

Really?
I wonder how they determine if they are safe or not. Just a visual check for loose bolts or is it the wiring they test? or both:confused:

I would think they would check everything ?

If adaquate thickness of steel used,if corroded/rust,secured properly, wiring,at the end of the day what do you use a tow-hitch for ?To tow another vehicle, wether it being a trailor carrying X or maybe a car,it still poses a danger to other road users ...

I have checked with hubby (MOT Tester) and the main thing they are looking for is that it is fixed well and secure and that there isn't corrosion within 30cm.

Hope this helps

Reason for Rejection

A towbar component insecure, fractured or excessively:
Worn
Corroded, or
damaged

Towbar assembly is attached to the vehicle structure using a mounting, support or fixing which is obviously of an innapproproate size or type.

Retaining device missing or insecure

Locking device missing, insecure, inadequate or damaged to the extent that its operation is impaired.

Excessive play between a detachable tow ball and the receiver socket.

A quick release mechanism that does not secure the tow ball are as intended.

A locating or swivel pin missing or insecure

Excessive play or wear in a locating or swivel pin or bracket

A locating or swivel pin retaining device missing or insecure

Any deliberate modification, excessive corrosion, damage, fracture or inadequate repair of a load bearing structure or supporting panelling within 30cm of the towbar mountings, which affects its strength to the extent that the security of attachment of the towbar is significantly reduced.
