The Luxury of a Campsite.

trompete

no shame at all...call in and do the housework, it works for us wherever we are.

Mental freeze whats a CL

Certified Location 5 van max only site run by the Caravan club but privately owned by farmers, nurseries, pubs, that kind of thing. Caravan and Camping club has similar CS Certified sites. About 2500 CL's and about 1500 CS sites in the UK I think. Range from just a field with a tap and emptying from about £4 a night up to showers and EHU and over £15 a night.

As I said at the start. I am a sinner, certainly in your eyes, but I really don't care. We are all allowed a little luxury sometime and whatever we do won't change the attitude of LA's unless they see something in it for them or theirs.

Excuse me !!!....Where the hell have I said you are a sinner ? very assumptive thank you . What I said if you care to re read is there are plenty of sites that offer a proposition to satisfy our wide range of needs. I then further suggested this solution is why and for good reason LA's see no need to spend on aires.

For clarity , How you spend your money and why is not my concern provided you derive value

regards

Channa

Please accept my sincere apologies for upsetting you.

Hi NZ by your own admission and others you use CL's or CS's ...Surely that sends to a council the message there is provision. ? Unless of course people are wanting to take advantage of that mystical word "free" ?.

Forgive me but I know of no local authority with a registered charity number ! When people say we are prepared to pay then the services are already there. ?

Under the current climate without getting involved with politics , It is pretty obvious to me Local Authority struggles to meet the needs of the local ratepayers cuts in every direction....So the notion a LA is going to provide a solution to which there already is one I would suggest is not going to happen. Even moreso when the majority of Wllders have the means to pay, and that means is already provided for by CL's etc...

Channa

I Don't think I'm following fully in what your saying (My fault not Yours).
But YES, I do think that there are currently options OR 'Provisions' for Waste Dumping & an Overnight stays in most council areas certainly in Wales, England, Ireland & probably 'MOST' parts of Scotland too !, As I'm guessing (& it IS only a Guess) that if you was to get a map of the UK & Overlay ALL of the available Private Campsites, Businesses, Stopovers, Or whatever initials people put on these kinda facilities I would suggest that your only ever going to be about 20 miles or so away as the crow flies from a facility, or site of some sort or another that can be used !. I've never had a Problem in 2 years now !.

PLEASE don't miss understand the fact that I'm ALL FOR council Ares to be Provided, & would be happy to use & Pay for those facilities should they exist in exactly the same way as I currently do with others that are currently on offer.

I honestly see nothing wrong with disposing of your Waste responsibly & Using anything else that may also be on offer during your stay (Showers, Electric, Waste bins etc) at the facility that you have chosen to use in order to do that.

I have the 'Provision' to use my vehicle for transport, But It doesn't mean I cant or shouldn't use a business facility of say a Bus or Taxi to get to somewhere if I chose on occasion (as an example)

No I don't think I know of any councils that have registered charity numbers either ! (Again,, Not sure what your point is there either,,Im obviously not in tune tonight ! LOL LOL).

I suspect part of the reason they don't or won't is that there would be a certain number of folks that would take the P in some of the more popular areas....
Car parks with a, bunch of long term motorhomers/campers wouldn't be seen as a terribly attractive sight... let alone dealing with the waste/etc produced.
mixed in with a large slice of they see popular areas as having commercial sites provided for folks.... and they get a large slice of business rates from them.

It has been stated on this thread that one goes to a campsite to relax?
I can't relate to that at all, give me a deserted wilding spot with fantastic views like a mountainside, lakeside, riverbank & etc., then I can relax. Certainly not lined up with other vans on a wretched campsite.
Right now I am sitting outside the van, G&T in hand, on a very warm evening, watching the surrounding Moroccan hills turn red in the setting sun from my wilding spot.
Man, am I relaxed!

There are campsites and there are CAMPSITES though.....
I wouldn't for a second spend a moment on a large busy commercial campsite BUT I know of sites where solitude and fantastic views are available where you simply cannot physically wild camp....
And Sometimes it's nice to have some time without any concerns about being moved on etc AND to use facilities like showers etc....

All horses for courses.... though

In addition to the stop overs, I've never had a Problem in 2 years now !.

Hi NZ perhaps we both mis understand ?!

My point is what we want is already being provided by CL's CS's Pub stops, Marinas etc. What possible reason would local authorities identify there is additional need, when the alternatives are already there ?

David's silly analogy of yellow paint aside, Most of us would accept that councils are strapped for cash and any money spent quite fairly in my opinion is spent on providing services for their constituents. Libraries, schools all seem to be under the kosh so diverting monies to aire type arrangements is way off the agenda.

We also need to be careful what we ask for, Establishment of aire type stops possibly generates Parking orders etc especially in places like Whitby or other areas where there is impact of campers. The detrimental effect is existing spots become out of bounds.

As an aside, this morning I was looking at tripadvisor reading reviews of a restaurant I cheffed at. I then looked at what was a competitors called the Sand House 400 metres from Lowdhams a motor home dealer so an ideal stop. It seems they are happy to offer an overnight stop and two meals for £10 ...excellent beers. I for one would rather support local businesses and pubs like this than push for aires and the risks that induces

I hope that makes sense.

Incidentally the pubs location 5 miles one way all the hustle and bustle of Huddersfield ,5 miles tuther Holmfirth last of the summer wine country and a stunning little town and plenty more besides.

So £10 a night on a council generated aire ( if it happened) Or £10 per night in a quiet car park with two meals included..The council blown out the water far better spending on libraries. !

I'm not a "closet campsite user ".....I'm quite open about if when and why I would use a site

I think I'm right in assuming that although this site is called wildcamping it doesn't mean we all have to be doing it all of the time ........wildcamping, that is lol
As another member said, for me too, it's crowds and being over priced that are the site no no's

I would never ever use a big busy commercial site, not even if I was desperate, but show me a quiet spot with a lovely view, wildlife and, if a few others are there, the possibility of tucking myself into a distant corner, then I'm happy to pay occasionally .....but ecstatic if it's free and deserted 😁😁😁

You hit the nail on the head, I agree 100%.
I only use C&CC CS sites and when visiting the lakes over winter which is usually every 2 weeks 9 times out of 10 I'm usually the only one there, 400 yards from a minor road with great views, toilet, ehu if required and hard standing. The site I use is ran on trust and the owners are fellow motorhomers and basically let you get on with it for want of a better word.
It's secure so I can leave my pvc safe in the knowledge it will still be there and undisturbed when I return.
Finally it's cheap and is perfect for my usual 2 nights wilding, 2 nights on a CS then back to wilding on my way home.

Just as a bit of Useless information.
I saw the Cess Pit Truck Sucker thingimebob Bloke today at the site I stayed on doing what he does best, Went into the office & chatted to the Warden (Well Deputy Warden actually) about average costs for that service.

Apparently from memory the Approximate Average per 4000lt suck out is charged at around the £150.00 per visit mark.
How much does a cassette hold ?..... 15-20lt at a guess maybe !. Lets say for the sake of argument 25lts per cassette dump...including the Flush n Clean water used.
SO Who's got a calculator to work out How much per Lt it costs ?. (if your board !).

25 litres per dump times 40 is 1000 litres .... times 4 we get 4000 litre truck load , so thats 160 cassettes ... at 150 quid per truck thats a pound per cassette..... whats the calculator for?

oh you wanted per litre .... a quid for 25 litres comes to 4p per litre

Thanks ricc,
I have been charged anything from a Cpl of quid in a counter top charity box, to up around the £10 mark just to Dump my Cassette, Chuck my Rubbish & fill up my main tank with water at a facility, & as said earlier Around the £15 ish if staying a night with Electric & Hot Showers. So was just wondering really.
