Just looking at southern park & ride sites for Edinburgh and noticed that the Sheriffhall & Straiton P & R web site has a height restriction of 1.9m. Has anyone been there lately and is this true..Thanks John

I live near that P&R

Yes it is true and they have just cleared out the last load of travellers that drove across the flowerbeds to avoid the 2M height barriers.
There was a right mess left too.

Sorry

Hi Ian,

We must be near neighbours, I'm just 2 mins from the roundaboot? And yes, they left a huge mess. I was at the airport a couple of times over the last two week, I can't say I noticed restrictions there, possibly further in though, may be an idea lill mutt to give the airport a call, are you looking for an overnight stop, or just somewhere to park for a few hours to view the city, safe to park up where I am, overnight would be ok, problem is the hill, unfortunately!!

Cheers....

Hi Runnach..Thanks for the reply. We were only using it for day trips to the city then looking for wild spots overnight. We will be spending most of the time in the Gasashiels/Melrose area where my wife's (Pringle) family settled and are buried at the abbey. We thought a drive up to Edinburgh would be worth having a look for a few days. When you say hill, would it accommodate a Mooveo P6 ?. Would you recommend anywhere else we could camp overnight ?..Regards..John

best to park over night at musselburgh Harbour. 100m to bus stop, bus runs every 20mins in to town center.
toilets and cafe in area, also safe to leave vehicle,

Hi John,

I think you would get away with this, good spot too if heading north via A7, I would park up at Dobbies garden centre, from there, short walk to bus stop just out main entrance gate to the city. Dobbies Garden World - Google Maps this is an old image, once in maingate, road layout is slightly different, once in, take sharp left towards Melville Inn, loads of parking there, keep close to Inn for security reason, lots of bods around.

I would think at a push, you could perhaps have a sneaky over nighter, as the Inn is obviously open a lot later. Best to have a wee contingency plan just in case you have to move on, my original thought was bottom of Lugton Brae, short walk over brig to bus stop, be ok I reckon for an over nighter, but road on a slope.

Anyways, hope you find a spot, just my 2p worth...........

Cheers.

Hi runnach.
Many thanks for taking the time to help..Much appreciated.
Regards. John

This spot is in the POI download ...

Good stuff, looks like your sorted, Quay in a private venue type establishment, I really don't know if they have bar facilities for the walk in public? However, you do have th Ship Inn very short walk from POI area.

Cheers........
Thanks runnach for that..Looks like the SHIP INN will get a couple of new patrons for a night. We come from a tourist town of 2,000 that can only survive through visitors so we know the value of spreading some of the money around..

Gorgeous place, just like Scotland, except there appears to be something bright in the sky, salt water crocs, hungry sharks and, sea snakes that do not necessary inject venom if they bite................funny few minutes waiting to find out tho :rolleyes2:

Hope all scots are as funny and helpful as you

I can't imagine life without a wee bit humour and, I'm sure info sharing would be reciprocal if required.

Hope you enjoyed the city.....

Cheers.

Hi again runnach.
I know it's a little bit off the thread, but you might be able to help. We are looking for somewhere to hear some real scottish bagpipes.(October 10th -15th).. We have emailed the visitscotland info site an received the following reply..(I am sorry but it is unlikely that you will hear any pipe bands during October, as the season will have finished for 2011. Most pipe bands play in competitions from around May - September.) We don't mind if it's not a full band and would be happy just to watch band practice or even school band. Hope you don't mind me asking..Regards John

Had a word with the guys today, they basically said what visitjockland said, end of competition/events season, however, one gave me information on a couple of websites, peruse the sites, something going down at the >>>> Date for the diary: Saturday 15th October Royal Scots Club<<<<

What are we up to next? | The Eagle Pipers' Society drop them a line fo info, same for this lot >>>> Scots Guards Piping <<<<

HTH?

Slainte.

Thanks runnach, I have googled the sites and there might be something there for us. Much appreciated. If you are ever down this way, let us know.Regards John

My children all play for Bucksburn pipe band in Aberdeen, and practice with the band twice a week. I think any band would not mind you going along to their practice, if you contact them first. The only thing is, they will not be in uniform. The other thing that might be a drawback is that those dates are in the school holidays and many bands might have a couple of weeks off, as the schools they practice in will be closed. (though ours doesn't, they just find somewhere else) If you get in touch with the RSPBA, and tell them approx which area you will be in for the dates you are available, they will hopefully tell you the local bands and you could contact them through their individual websites.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I will be in touch with the RSPBA to find out if anything is on. Regards John

No worries mate and, pleased the info is of some use to you :)

Ever down this way em, Melrose, or doon doon under?

Hi runnach. Thanks for that. We will be spending most of the time in the Melrose area where my wife's (Pringle) family settled and built Smailholm Tower, one is buried at the abbey. Any tips on where to visit and meet real scots around there ?.

Are you actually living in the tower, or has it changed hands over the centuries, I know the tower, although was many years ago when since my last time in this area.

Real Scots.............aye, there are some up here, along with one from France, keeping the auld alliance going

You are funny
