Whats the road like to Applecross? Apparently it is the highest road pass in Britain. I believe there might even be a coast road although I cant see it on my map

Getting there is the best thing, arriving at Applecross is a bit of an anti-climax, but the journey over the pass is breath-taking...DO IT!!

The short answer is: superb! And yes, there is a coast road - north out of the village to Shieldaig where there is a wonderful camping area owned by the local crofters (put some cash in the honesty box). Unlike some others, I like the village of Applecross - and you can wildcamp by the old church just to the north of the village. I would recommend going in one way and coming out the other. Happy travels.

Hi I went in on the high pass in June 2009 in a 22 foot 664 escape, road is quite narrow with passing places.you need to look up to judge large lorry,s for the best place to pass them but the locals know the roads and will flash you up the pass or visa versa a great place and the pub does great sea food.

good luck snowbirds.

Hi John

yeah we stayed a shieldaig last year, in the crofters field, we put £10 in the pot, we filled up with water, the owner of the land was lovely, very helpful gave us loads of advice and we thought £10 was a bargain and it helps to keep the place going, we saw people leaving and not donating, spoke to one couple of campers and they thought it was disgusting that he was asking for money, lol,

Applecross and Sheildaig

The road has hairpins but is great. Going down the other side into Applecross is beautiful. I think Applecross itself is wonderful and is where my heart soars. yes, the beach is wonderful and where I am headed shortly.

Where is the fireld in Sheidaig?

Anywhere in Torridon?

Hi smally

this is the crofters field

you cant miss it as you drive into Sheildaig, there are loads of places around Loch Torridon, in my opinion, the beaches up there are far nicer than Applecross, but it is personal,

enjoy (i'm sooooo jealous)

Applecross

Depends on the size of your camper, ours has a scooter rack on and some of the bends we had to reverse back to take some of them, beautiful views though. :mad1:

This place is in the POI database :)

The road is the best place in Scotland to view Ptarmigan without having to climb up a mountain.
