Pretty drastic news..... In East Lothian

11pm is a bit suspicious, could have been worse if someone was staying in one without asking the owners!

I feel very lucky that I can store my van on my property.

Wouldn't like to think mine was in storage and packed in that close. I gather the 6m rule doesn't apply when its in storage and not on the campsite?

Looking at the picture in the Edinburgh Evening News it looks like it was mainly caravans. Bad news for all the owners whatever their unit.
The 6m rule is a guidline when camping. It is a construct of the main clubs in the UK, which has been adopted by some local authorities. It is certainly not a feature of continental camping sites.

the 6mt rule is based on fire reqs & applies to bottled gas installations, there is a single mention of system being isoated which could mean when system is turned off reqs don’t apply in the same way, but every gas course i did the interpretation emphasis changed,

The title gives East Lothian bad press. We are short of fireraisers here as we are too busy eating takeaways, going to the bookies and stealing off each other. Bob.

Out of curiosity how did you charge/manage the happy campers who put up one of these modern family tents... like rectangular big tops..... ie big enough for the circus? The ones that cover two or three pitches?

“It’s awful. Especially as caravan season is around the corner.”

In Scotland? Must be a bloody big corner.

And the fire was in West Lothian anyway so keep poor East Lothian out of this or Mid Lothian might get involved. Why would you buy an expensive caravan have it stored at a facility and not have it insured. Does the owner of the storage yard not have any insurance responsibilities?

The 6m rule is fictional.

When I ran a campsite, I was concerned about how tightly we would have to pack units in (or more specifically, about how many people would insist on a 6m gap), so I got the fire brigade to come and look. They said as close as we liked was fine, as long as we left "roadways" big enough for a fire engine to get around the site.

So the people who were not happy to be closer were sited 6m from their neighbours, then later we put anther into the gap.

If you think that I suggest you apply for an exemption, the 6m rule is very much a requirement.

The 6 m rule on sites I was involved with was certainly of interest to the local fire service and firebreaks to get appliances through

It is a big problem on static sites a lot now not allowing wooden decking

Rules aside, I can recall 3 sites where there were fires, 6 m gaps and adjacent vans damaged . the speed vans go up in flames there is a good argument 6 m is not sufficient distance

Frankly IF 6m is you're nearest "neighbour"
I'll stay at home as my neighbours will be further away AND for free.

It’s one of the few rules they have at Sands Holiday Park at Gairloch, at least 6m away from your neighbors.
