Porridge

We love porridge but not cleaning the pot afterwards, any tips for making this an easier task. Excluding expensive ready made porridge the beauty is it’s cheap and healthy. We also hate it with salt ;)

Let the pan clean itself. Once you have cooked and eaten the porridge, pour an inch of water into the saucepan and simmer for a while, anything that was stuck to the pan will float off, dispose of water and dry the pan. This works with frying pans too.

Helps if the pan being cleaned has a lid.

Whichever way you look at it, making porridge means that something is gonna get gooey.

If you have a Nutri Bullet or similar, you can make splendid muesli types of porridge. I like a variety of nuts, raisins, currants, sometimes dried fruits, whizz the nuts etc in the blender
then whizz the dried oats. To minimise washing up, I don't cook the porridge, I boil some milk and add it to the bowl of whizzed and dry oats etc.

i always fill my porridge pan with water as i serve up my breakfast. Soaking, even in cold water, is a fabulous way to reduce cleaning.

Use a silicon spatula in a non stick pan, then after serving put pan back on warm hob with it turned off the residual heat drys the remaining porridge and you can wipe it straight into the bin, that way it don’t go down the sink with washing up water.

washing up liquid and cold water soak in empty saucepan, washing ups easy, my wife does it !

Microsoft instead of Linux !
One works the other sticks ?

I use the same method at home and in the van.

Half mug of oats, one mug of water and a half mug of milk. Bring to the boil, turn off the heat and stick your bowl for the morning on top of the pan. After reheating in the morning fill the pan immediately with cold water and the stuff that's left on the pan scrapes off nicely with said spatula.

Cleaning procedure is fine but - the recipe is not for me
I use
Full fat milk
Added fresh cream (or Elmlea) at about 20%
Cinnamon piece (proper Sri Lankan/ South American) and couple of cloves to soak in the milk from the night before

Bring go boil with however much oats you like - thick or thin. I like it thick
TINY touch of sprinkled sugar of you really mush

PS - I need to put weight ON, hence the cream
PPS - makes a lovely supper

Snod

I like that idea.
I want to lose weight, himself needs to put it on, if I can get him to eat porridge.;)

Do what doctors do and put a sign on bed end, nothing by mouth for a week,he will eat it then.:scared::lol-053::lol-053::lol-053:

I put a bit of milk on top followed by salt, butter then sometimes I add a blob of jam or golden syrup.

I quite like the 'Oats so simple' Golden Syrup flavour when in the van. Add hot water, eat, chuck the pot away.

Not that expensive Pen, usually 75p a pot but sometimes a lot cheaper in places like B&M etc. Ok, the bags are a lot cheaper than that, but in for a Penny.......

buying oats packaged in paper from supermarkets and shops is a much less environmentally damaging way - no plastic. i buy oats in 7kg bags - it a lot cheaper even for organic and i can transfer the oats into containers which fit my van storage cupboards. win-win

Rob you need to look how much Oats are in supermarkets, you get a lot for 75p.

Yeah I know Lee. Julie lives on porridge for breakfast. Me I get my oats once in a blue moon!

Much more convenient though and you know I shouldn't be let near the stove when I'm away alone!

Penny, I'd wipe the saucepan round with some kitchen roll as soon as you've served up the porridge to get rid of all the bits, then put water and a bit of washing up liquid in the pan for a soak.

This is fine in the house but a big issue in the van... the bits all end up in the washing up bowl and inevitably down the sink. That's why I wipe all food debris off with kitchen towel before it sets... then what's left gets a soak. Same with all pans, plates and cutlery.
