POI files - Yes I'm thick but please answer my question!

Hello fellow wildcampers

Yes I know I'm stupid:confused:, but the POI files - can you print off a list of places where these are, or is it all technical and has to been downloaded onto a sat nav etc?

At the risk of being laughed at (!) I had this vision in my head that I could print off a directory type list with all of the wildcamping spots marked under their appropriate counties etc...eg, Devon

I hope I've not annoyed too many of you, maybe even given some of you a laugh :lol-049:, but an answer to my question would really be appreciated. Many thanks

We really love wild camping & I joined this group to try and find more places in our local area, as we never know where to stop etc..... :wave:
 
There isn't an option to print out a directory as things stand.

3,000 plus entries would use up a lot of paper, and would go out of date very quickly.

The download is refreshed quite a few times each year - the next one will be out in a couple of days.

You do need to use a computer or satnav to access the information.

However you could use Google Earth or Autoroute to print off a map with the pushpins shown - that would give you a quick point of reference for a particular area.

I'm glad I'm not the only one carolinemoon. I've downloaded the POI twice and I can't find them on my ruddy computer. Have given up. You've probably guessed that I'm not very computer savvy.

I'll just take everyones word that there are 3,000 of them. :lol-053:
 
Just to let you guys know, I'm feeling very pleased with myself this morning - I actually sat in front of my laptop last night and downloaded Google Earth. I can now see hundreds of wild camping spots and spent probably an hour going up and down "my road"!! ha ha

Thanks for everyone's help. We're heading off to Abbotsbury this weekend for a spot of fishing and wild camping - happy days!:banana:

Dont worry I had already raised something similar a few weeks ago (I'm clearly a techno bimbo too ..... but just think of all the other great things we can do ... LOL!). Once explained and set up through google earth it does seem less complicated.

A sat nav is a small box that you place on the dashboad of your vehicle to guide you to your destination. In olden times drivers would have a map written on large sheets of paper so they could see where they are, where they want to be, and find the roads in between. All quite difficult while trying to drive.


With the latest miniaturisation techniques available, the scientific bods have created teeny tiny maps inside a small box. They then place an elf with a megaphone onto a padded stool inside the box to read the map. So there he is, sat navigating for you, hence the name sat nav has become commonplace amongst forward thinking drivers with the latest gadgets.

thanks, i thought they only were used on a Sat :) i was joking when i said what are they, i have had one for a couple of years, but got nooooo idea how it works. i needed one to drive to dresden to see a girl. last time i went with a map to see a girl, i got confused by hanover and hamburg and lost at other places...

i used to drive trucks many years ago, i was no good with maps back then, and sat navs im still not too great with lol
 
You can't really print it out in a usable format.

But - you can use a computer....

Buy Autoroute and import the Autoroute file - and you can then "see" the POIs, zoom in, and play on your laptop (off line) - which is probably the best you've got. You can print the autoroute map if necessary with the POIs....

THen you can get loads of other POIs (like mine Download GPS POI files ) - which then help you see everything.

Once you try it you won't use paper again....

I can't help but notice the amount of people that seem unable to fully grasp the POI file. (I was one too remember!!!)
Why not post a 'sticky' thread with some instructions?
Just a thought...tell me to mind my own business if you like!
 
google earth

hi carolinemoon, would love to know how you did it. i'm new to this site and wild camping, I've got google earth but not sure what to do next to find the sites. many thanks in advance :mad1:

There's a specific forum that outlines in detail procedures to use the download files.

Just go here POI file Help and Support

There are threads that deal specifically with Google Earth and Autoroute, plus usage with a whole host of different satnav makes :)
