2002 Transit Duratorq 2.4 Diesel – Turbo / Fuel pump / Immobiliser – problems

Began with lack of power. Local garage checked turbo mechanicals – OK, but diagnostic code showing problem with pump/ECU. Pump and ECU sent to specialist who returned it saying OK. Refitted and van started OK. Went to collect from garage but van wouldn’t start, turning over but not firing. Diagnostics still showing pump/ECU problem. Next day after no further work done on it van started so started using it again but still no turbo power.

Next to Auto electrician who suspected wiring problem but after a week of trying (he said) couldn’t find it, his diagnostics still showing pump/ECU. Went collect it from him and at first it wouldn’t start, turning over but not firing. Took key out, locked and unlocked the doors and tried again then it started.

Made arrangements to take it to Diagnostics specialist but the day it was due to go it wouldn’t start, turning over but not firing. This time I noticed the immobiliser light ‘blinking’ quickly and then giving the code ‘23’ which I am told means ‘23 - ECU ID mismatch (duff ECU)’. This is happening all the time now and it won’t start. Help.

So now we have a beautiful pile of scrap!!!

If you can't find a local scroaty type (theyd be able to bypass the Ford immobiliser in seconds ;-))

Then have, a search on the transit forums for immobiliser reset....

As it sounds like the immobiliser has become corrupted....
Cross fingers you haven't had a lowish battery where the current required to turn the engine over basically wipes the Ecu.
Thanks. Already joined the Ford forum. So - any idea how to find a scroaty type without making it public????? Tricky one!!!!!

Must be where I live BUT they are around ever night round here.

Make sure you get a decent steering lock Disklok ideally IF you haven't already...

Transit door locks are pitiful (less than 20 seconds to open with a eBay £20 lock pick)
And even the Hykee high security ones are only seconds longer...

Not for no reason is the transit THE, most stolen van.

I am sure Christine is now happy that the van will not start after seeing how easy to they are to pinch LP🤔🥴
You'd be amazed how many folks that own transit based campers/motorhomes have no idea about Ford's pitiful ideas about security....

Speaking personally I'm glad that I already knew when I bought one....

As it allowed me to take precautions to stop it disappearing.

Wasn’t there some trick where you plugged a gadget into the indicator lamp bulb holder in the drivers door mirror? This would override the security.

I would not be amazed myself but a lot of new owners would be so it is good to let them know, to be honest none of the original locks are very good, my 2002 Ducati based Hymer can be opened very easily with a screwdriver

Yes I totally agree, forewarned is forearmed. If I owned a transit I woukd want to know about this. But it makes you wonder why a company the size of Ford have not rectified this issue. I believe even current versions are not much better.

if a new one gets nicked the insurance co will buy another new one.... if its an older one it helps to keep the used market bouyant... no insentive for ford to do anything whilst it doesnt negatively impact sales

The only thing that will change Ford is when insurance comps get together and start to decline insuring transits. Personally I would never buy one for this issue alone. They are not worth the potential hassle.
