By newsroom On Tuesday, September 13, 2011, at 3:42pm The EU Commission has approved a UK bid for a fuel duty derogation that could see petrol and diesel prices in the isles cut by 5p per litre.

In response to the news, Northern Isles MP Alistair Carmichael said: “This is the single most important step on the road towards reducing the cost of petrol and diesel in the isles.

“I am delighted that we have got this consent and hope that the remaining hoops will be a formality to jump through.

Can only be a good thing... haven't been across for about 2 years now, before the van, and it was extortion then, can never figure it as a hell of a lot of oil comes in from the North Sea via Flotta. I was fortunate that I'd packed some biodiesel last time, which saved some pennies, but the van is petrol, so kinda tough...

Was very impressed that the flight to Papay was only £12 though! Really must make the trip over againx, love the place, the Viking history, the people, the whisky and beer (Dark Island!!). Maybe next year...
