I bought one of these, Blue Car Fuel saving Eco OBD II OBD2 Diesel Saver Auto Tuning Box Chip Y2K5Q | eBay at less than a fiver I though nothing to loose, and they say it could improve fuel consumption by 15% so I should see 28MPG.

I hadn't reset the trip B for 4000 miles and the average consumption was at 25.1MPG

The trip A that I use regularly was also at 25.1MPG for 1500 miles.

So the first trip out was only 120 miles and was not favourable with 23.1MPG.

The 2nd trip was 350 miles and returned 26.8MPG. I think I will leave it a bit long and see if the improvement stays or gets better.

If you save fuel then you loose power somewhere along the line, try wearing lighter boots.

So it plugs into the CanBus and away you go. Like the bit about fits any vehicle. Be interesting to have a look inside one. Probably an OBD2 connector with a plastic box round it.

I am afraid you are wrong Trevskoda the ad says

35% More Power, 25% More torque and you save FUEL as well .. Also comes in 4 different colours :lol-061::lol-061::lol-061::lol-061::lol-061::lol-061::lol-061::lol-061::lol-061:

Most tuning boxes MPG claims are snake oil.

The vehicle works out the digital MPG based on miles covered and the amount of fuel that it thinks that it is supplying to the engine. The boxes generally connect to the fuel rail pressure sensor and increase the fuel pressure by sending a false (lower) fuel rail pressure reading to the injection system. Because the pressure is higher more fuel passes through the injectors on each spray, this gives the vehicle more power (more fuel = more power) but it also means the the vehicles ECU thinks that less fuel has been used when actually it has not.

These devices can actually potentially cause damage by getting the engine to run incorrectly.
I would not leave it plugged in thinking "nothing to lose" - you could lose more than a few MPG!

You cynical lot you, the Chinese are our friends, they would not sell me anything that could damage my engine

What Admin says makes sense, I've not notice anything different with the way the van runs, but it does make me wonder weather the computer is now telling me about the new MPG is correct. One thing for sure is when it goes in for it's first Fiat service next month (to keep up the vehicle warranty) it won't be in.

I'm sure it won't do anything whatsoever to the engine but I wouldn't be surprised if it hacked your e-mail ;)

Why is you ECU smoking .. All that there is in the box is a resistor that makes the ECU think the engine is colder than it is.

Yup. And with the emissions tech such as EGRs, DPFs and other stuff, that constant misfueling could end up having less than ideal results on those systems.

Reminds of a joke I heard many years ago.

A man is fishing with a rod and line in a busy street, with his hook down a stank.

Bye his side is a cap with a few coins inside.

An old lady stops and puts a 50p coin in the hat.

She feels sorry for the man, and asks have you caught anything young man.

He replies.

Well yes you are the fifth one today. ;);)

I took one of these apart a while back, it is a single resistor across 2 of the pins.
Snake-oil is a perfect descriptor.
