Looking to visit family in York later this month and as they are at work/school most of the day, we thought we might go and annoy the residents of Whitby and Scarborough for the day :camper: As we well know they love motorhomes around that area, so the question is where would you go around that area for a day out? Anywhere for a day out that would keep us occupied till they come home. Don't need to stopover as we can park outside their house overnight, just looking for days out.

Answers on a postcard will be used to light the fire, thanking all you clever people in advance

North York Moors Railway.
Get an all day ticket, expensive but you can visit Pickering, Goathland, Grosmont etc etc.

Your question got me thinknig. For years my son & I have been going to Scarborough, as we used the sealife centre for overnighting in the van. When I thought about it, we used to park on marine drive & watch the sea, then ride the open top busses on a day ticket. Thinking now,I can't remember a thing that II'd be bothered to go to Scarborough for! On top of the fact that the council threarened to put me in ciurt for parking in a completely unrestricted parking spot I don't think I'd choose Scarborough again. Whitby is a lovely place tho, lots of good memories for me. Great views & good atmosphere. When you,ve walked round & seen the harbour & checked out the many shops in the old side of the town go for a walk up the steps to the abbey (try not to get bitten by Dracula!)
Then there's a good few decent pubs for lunch,or how about the Magpie Restaurant? Famous for fish & chips.
On then out of town & in a few miles you can be up on the moors enjoying the peace & open spaces along with sea views from the clifftops.
If you like walking try the Cleveland Way. Runs along the coast &seems popular.

Thanks guys, but I forgot to say that she-who-must-be-obeyed can't walk far (degeneration of spine and old crash damage to back and hips) and we can only fit a little buggy in the van so not a lot of walking involved

Whitby

If you park down by the marina behind the co-op you are on the flat and can walk all the way along the river to the front.
If you want to park up and look at the view you can do that on the top of north Clif during the day

Whitby then, big carpark next to the harbour, NYMRailway runs steam right past carpark now I believe so steam train ride if it,s running. Good pub just over the road (The Plough) & shops etc a short walk away. Plenty to see in the harbour too sometimes an old sailing ship to see if the regatta type event is on. Saw the Endeavour replica thing there one time, that was great.

Heres a bit of a curve ball to throw in. Flamborough head and Filey Brig. Some lovely cliff top views and plenty of CL's (I think you can park overnight at the light house at Flamborough. Plenty of CL and CS sites, rally fields etc and there is a good little site at Filey Brig or you can park on the huge cliff top grass area for the day (pay and display). Its a pity your other half cannot walk far as its a cliff top walkers paradise that whole stretch.

We were there a couple of months in the summer and Autumn. We biked over to Whitby and Scarborough from there for the odd day out.

Thanks but we have overnight sorted outside their house, just looking for daytimes. It is a shame as I love a good yomp in the countryside, just not the same on your own

Hi here’s another curved ball, as you are in York the elvington air museum is only a few miles away. Very disabled / motorhome and dog friendly. Could easily spend a few hours there even if weather is not good. If you did decide to go I would recommend taking the guide option £10 and very informative. If you are set on the coast option I would say Filey is worth a look as easy to park a motorhome near the cobble landing and the promenade is nice and flat for a buggy.

Leave Whitby and Scarborough to rot.
A little further north, up the coast. Is Runswick Bay.. Super pub, for lunch.
Staithes is reasonably accessible and has pleasant watering holes.Robin Hoods Bay is ok, too.

Whitby Scarnough andFiley all under the remit of the same council .York itself you can lose yourselves for days, considering your wife on a motab scooter York lends itself quite well lots of Museums the Minster, Shambles Bishopthorpe and cruises on the Ouse the obvious tourist attractions , Railway museum worth a visit and free entranc
Harrogate is worth a visit an old spa town a is Knaresboough a decent day out, If the coast is your thing Runswick Staithes and Robinhoods bay are picturesque but you may find access difficult with a motab scooter not dis similar to Clovelly in Devon ,,,,en route there is Eden camp (A64) that is ex Italian POW and tells the tale of life in those days or the picture postcard village of Thornton le dale and a fraction beyond the forest drive through Dalby eventually arriving via Hackness the North end of Scarborough CLoughton worth a visit for the view

Channa

Isnt access to all those a bit steep though? Its a while since ive been to any of them but I remember them being steep and a hike down to the village. I think Runswicks car park is at the bottom (ish)

Both have dry steep hills and difficulty in walking was mentioned.

In agreement there. The big places get far too much publicity & people either forget or don't know about the smaller less talked about areas. Can't beat "The road less travelled" sometimes. Good times can be had exploring new places & many gems have been found over the years, sometimes in the most unlikely places....

If you fancy Whitby park in park & ride and get bus in if you take scooter on the bus (or you could go on bus and wife ride in on scooter, about 1 1/4 miles.

Whitby. Drive past coop towards marina back car park - over roundabout and on right. Enter and aim towards back right corner. There are 4 spaces with big overhangs.

Apologies.
I thought the mobility scooter might be battery powered?
Check out available Blue Badge parking, if you have one.. There's bound to be something accessible organised.
