Hi all just considering a second trip up to mountains again as May visit to our beloved Highlands slightly wet to say the least!!!! anyway may try next week but need somewhere to pull off and sleep about half way, so just around or just past Manchester. We leave after work so it will be late so any advice would be great have stayed once before at a country park cant remember name but alot of cars were cruising >>>>>>> so any other places we could google up great. Thanks oh yes a few little prayers for dry weather might help.

I know of people who have stopped overnight at Lymm truckstop (Poplars). Not in the truckstop but out near Mcdonalds. However now that it's run By Moto that might have changed.

We ate at the Saddle Inn, near Preston, and they said they are happy for people to use their car park - there are details on the Pub Stopovers thread.

Thank You your a darling

Lymm services/MacDonalds operates an ANPR style camera system, clocks you in, & then out. if you overstay & don't buy a ticket they will fine you.
Its a constant problem for many WVM etc.. As you're not really aware of it.
But it has flaws. I know if several cases where poeple have called in twice in one day, (on outward & homeward journey). and then they get a parking fine for being in the CP for several hours, despite only being there for a few minutes each time.

What a brilliant idea. Why do more places not do this?

Shame we can't use it on our up and coming trip - it's not quite far enough North.

I'd rather stop in a pub car park for free, and enjoy a couple of pints ...

There's loo access available too of course :)

May be to far north for you but get off at Junction 38 Tebay take the road to Orton - turn right just as you get in the village, couple of hundred yards, there is a paved fairly level layby very nice, sheltered and quiet - you just head north out of Orton and end up at Junction 39 Shap decent road - no trafic. there is a Car park in the village but I dont know if they dont like overnighters. Good Pub though.
