Hi Hope you all have some ideas im sure i will get loads .

Im off the asia in november for 5 months then we are planning to move to the south coast of england or there abouts so im looking for a few ideas. we are looking for good areas in small citys or towns .we are going to go down and stay a while and decide where to stay.

The plan is so it will be cheaper to get to europe and maybe more sun !

Oh we stay in edinburgh just now .

Scott

If your main reason to come South to live is to make it cheaper to cross the Channel, I would not bother, it is going to cost an arm and a leg to move to the South Coast.

for a start off the price of property for one, mind you it depends where in scotland you are now as some of the cities up there are not the cheapest of places to live . try south wales places are not that expensive down here in fact you can buy a house for next to nothing compared to many places in the south.and there are some great places to visit when not away and its still a darn site nearer to the ferries /eurotunnel than where you are now , mind you you may be megga rich and not worry about money ,

Ha i wish we will be renting edinburgh is pretty expensive so shouldnt be much more

we rent ,have done for years and i know a lot say its money wasted but i have found it ok ,at least we can upsticks and move at at any time if we want with minimum fuss and we havent got a house to lose money on or tied round my neck for years . . i have heared that edinburgh can be quite expensive .and we lived in london a few yers ,that is megga expensive to rent a place but i suppose that rents are realy all the same out of the big cities

Leigh Park in Portsmouth could be very very very cheap but after you've moved there you'll know why....

I concur with the south wales option, house prices are reasonable there and you can get something pretty good for your money in a reasonable area, and the motorway network around there is pretty good (at least all the times i've been there!). When i was looking at buying a house south wales always came out as the strong option. Also look at Gloucester - not south coast but the prices are surprisingly affordable for what is normally a very expensive area in the surrounding countryside, just be careful of some areas. For the coast itself i'd guess you have to go west to get the better deals, rural devon and cornwall wouldn't be too bad.

I don't think you will find anything reasonably priced near to the any of the main ports unless you are willing to buy in a bad area.

thanks so far but try to forget about price im just looking for areas that are not dodgy i can worry about the
cost later and i can always check on a letting web site ,i just cant tell if an area is nice from one

thats the only problem finding a place that is a so called nice place to live . but unfortunately nowadays finding a nice crime free area is like finding the needle that got lost in that haystack . whare we live is brand new new build and in a relatavely nice area but unfortunately we still have a small drug problem as do 99% of places nowadays and we had the boy racers flying about ,well we did do untill one of there cars caught fire , cannot understand how that happend but it seems to have stopped most of that .and the druggies are getting moved out the nice way or otherwise .

Well that would be ideal but i dont speak french so i would imaging getting a job would be hard

Portsmouth is very expensive to buy or rent, I normaly work there when not deployed overseas, I have a place in scotland twice the size and half the price of what I would need to spend in pompy, the road systems down here are prity bad also at rush hour, but the pirces do get a bit better if you head further east towards Dover areas, just not cheaper if you want to be on the coast, but look inland and the prices drop quite a lot. Some real nice areas to be found also, Hastings is also expensive so try looking inbetween pompy and dover areas but slightly inland would be my advice.

Squibby.

I must be missing something here? surely the first factor should be availability of work? then reasonably priced accommodation ? anywhere on this island is only a day away from europe and with hundreds of pounds extra in your pocket each week what difference does a day make, like i say i may be missing something

You could try somewhere like Deal on the east coast of Kent, rent is relatively cheap and its near Dover! Or further up the coast to Ramsgate is even cheaper!

hi, kernow is cornwall in cornish. unfortunately its hard to get a conversation in cornish ,but they do say its a growing language,. when i go to brittany i never say i,m english . much better to say cornish. brittany is the best area of france bar none.
there is work in cornwall. you might not get rich but usually find work. what do you do?
property isnt the cheapest but i like it here. well in the summer . even france is far too cold in winter,i thought about living there . near josslin or ploermel area mind i like muzillac or pontchateau as well.mind its all nice there. like here prices have jumped up alot in recent years . 20-30 grand could have bought the world only a few years ago.
decided i prefer to be here and travel in winter, best of both worlds. would have to come back to see family so keep the house and enjoy life.
cheers alan.
