After too long not be able to get away we are off for two weeks. Up to Berwick upon Twee and then very, very slowly working our way down the coast to Hull. We have the OS maps, wildcamping POIs and NT membership - any advice on must-sees or avoid.

To break the journey from Camberley planning to stop overnight around Sheffield. Looking at the Arkwright Arms, Duckmanton - anyone overnighted there? I will phone them first.

thanks David & Judy:drive:

Loads of spots

There are loads of spots dotted along the Nothumbrian coast. If you have a dog remember not to let it loose on Lindesfarne, they have a wild plant call Piri Piri and it caused my dog all sorts of problems last summer. There was a nice wild camp near Bamburgh Castle but think they may have height barriers now and closed the one further up the road near the golf club, maybe someone can confirm this. Enjoy

Bambough Castle

I would love to get an update on the spots at Bamburgh Castle - want to head that way as soon as they sort out the old fellas dicky ticker..... talking of which anyone tried to stay the night at Newcastle Freeman Hospital ( on the car park or close?)

We stayed overnight in the third car park (more of a large layby) along the Wyndings, ok for a CV, small MH - the first two have height barriers. Also saw MHs that looked to be parked up for the night in the public pay-and-display car park at the bottom of the hill under the castle.

We recently had a week at a C&CC THS at Beadnell and I did a bit of scouting for new wilding spots. The newly formed Northumberland County Council have notices up at several coastal car parks about no overnighting. It is however £2 to park all day (8am - 6pm).

What you could do is head for Newton by the Sea and bear left at The Joiners Arms. The car park by the beach is quite secluded and I cannot see you being disturbed by anyone down there. If you stay on the road at The Joinersw Arms, the other car park is outside of the village and might be worth a go also. It would depend on the attitude of the locals more than anything. I also think these 2 spots would be fine outside of the main holiday period. I will probably try them myself this Autumn/Winter. I have an 8.2 metre van and there would be no problem with access even though the first one is a single track road for the last part.

Teen, let me know when you need to be at the Freeman and for how long. I reckon you will have no chance but try phoning them beforehand. If you are stuck, I might be able to sort something out for you. It was something I got sorted for a member on here, then the t**t never bothered his backside and did not let me know. My son had called in favours and put himself out for this person. I am a bit reluctant to make another offer again but in your circumstances, I do not mind.

This sign is at Craster (which is not a wild POI). The 'no camping' sign has 'Northumbria Police' at the bottom. I thought it was the police's job not to make the law but to enforce it when a criminal offence has been created. I saw these 'no camping' signs in a number of places. Good that the sign shows a tent and not a MH/CV.

This sign is at Dunstan Stead, which is a wild POI. The sign looks home-made, from vehicle licence plates.

No signs at Lindisfarne Causeway or The Wyndings, Bamburgh - yet, also no charges - yet!
