much cheaper way of getting bottled gas!

dont mind using old engine oil though. always change the oil then chuck it in the diesel tank. works fine.

Is this just an occasional useage or are you doing lots of miles on old engine oil?

Where can I buy a 2nd-hand 6KG/13KG Red propane gas bottle in the Watford area??

Hello

Looking to buy a used Propane gas bottle (to avoid the need to sign an expensive gas contract) in Hertfordshire/Middlesex area. Can one of you Forum folks help?

TIA

:help:

have a quiet word qith the guy at your local recucling centre, they can usually supply for a quid or two

I have heard this but only on the internet and have never been able to find conclusive proof one way or another as to the legality in france. Do date not had any trouble but always turn off the veg at borders.
I had no issues in the alps but i run a 2nd fuel tank for the veg oil that is heated so was able to run 100%wvo even down to -20. Just had to wait before switching over to veg a while longer than normal.
Never heard that straight veg is worse on your filters, just bio diesel as it removes the tank lining.

Straight veg is not harmfull to filters perhaps I worded it wrong, (as usual) Veg will clean out the tank and system and dump all those years of crud in the filters. I changed my filter at 6 months and then at 12 along with the banjo filter. that was 2 years ago havent changed them since.

Used Gas Bottle

Many thanks, donkey too, for the tip (as it were....) I know that they are officially not allowed to sell recycled stuff at Council sites, but I shall enquire discreetly....:p

For the preparation of WVO for use as fuel, don't you also need to heat the oil and then let the water content settle out on cooling, and then siphon off the water. As well as putting it through some very fine fat filters.

Aye you do! You also have to get hula hula girls to dance around the veg oil tank and sing its praises! :cool1:

wanted to look into using old cooking oil for a while, but kept slipping my mind, it wasnt until some french guy posted its what he does in the same van as me, so i asked on a vw group and many said they do, it might effect rubber seals more, but your still talking many years ahead.

i want to go fossil hunting on the south coast, so again would be great, even for the trips to matlock! the more i can save on diesel, the more i can spend on things the campervan needs.

I still think refilling gas bottles is a good idea, i must know someone who has done it/still does it who are close to me.

The thing is if you live in your van full time you can save loads of money. For example I must use say 3-4 x 6kg bottles a year. That's maybe £100 even at full refill prices. Still way cheaper than trying to heat a whole house. And electric is similarly small at only £200-300 a year including some heating.

Have just found this picture for you, its of a hose used to connect an oxygen cylinder onto a manifold, the hose was rated at 300bar but it was a hydraulic hose and not designed for gas usage, worked for 2 days and then failed without warning whilst the cylinder was being changed

it put 2 guys in hospital, they were very lucky to survive.

Just goes to show that compressed gases do require a lot of respect.

doesnt prove a thing...as you say it was not designed for gas usage, so they were stupid to even try to use it, simple.

i dont intend to take unecicary risks, but i havent seen anyone prove anything to deter me from trying it.

I am not trying to deter you, but I do want you to check that you have covered all eventualities and fully understand what you are doing. The picture of the hose was taken in Dubai, I was on the other side of the yard when it failed. As the old saying goes Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

i have designed on paper a large 100litre use cooking oil system for my camper, will cost about a 70 quid in parts max (much less if i can use old scrap for most of it) only trouble is if im well enough to keep filling it, as the unit is tall and slim, so has to be filled via the roof lol. it should save one hell of a lot of money on fuel

Why not build in a pump (manual or electric) to fill the tank rather than lifting the oil to roof height.

i do know understand what your saying, its easy to use something that you think is upto the job yet isnt and can fail when you dont expect it.

its something i wouldnt risk until i had seen it done by someone who knows what they are doing, the tools etc are upto that job and i can be 100% certain i can do it safe. i dont really care about me, just anyone around me.

thats a good point, the 100litre containers are cylindical and tall thick plastic, so will hook up a pair. next week i plan to fit a full lenth roof rack i got cheap. So planned to keep my 25litre Jerry cans on there. Had thought about a pump unit, but want to wait on that idea until i can find the right pump and power for it. So i can manually fit them with no problem, but the pump idea is good, something i didnt think about..i a few powerful electric pumps laying around and slipped my mind.

why not apeal

if your posh or loadsa money, guess this wont appeal to you, but for those with not much dosh like me, anyway of saving a quid is good.

Why do you think i would not be interested if i got loads of money? How do you think i got loads of money? by reading and acting on peoples tips lol:) Thanks for this

Hi Miz,

Looks like the old type, rubber based tube. No longer used for O2 as uv light breaks it down. UV being present in sunlight which Dubai has plenty of. No surprise it failed when missused. If you use new pipe and the proper conections I don't see a problem.
