hi my grandma lived in high road. have a very old photo of her house. when i was born we lived in some prefabs on sheffield road . then we got posh and moved to lordshead lane. used to walk- cycle to eddlington by going down our road past the redrec. long time ago now.used to play in the old quarry park. i went to low road school and mill lane school.those were the days. glad we moved down here though. it seems my family did at one time leave cornwall to help build the coalmines in durham. . when tin was slowing down years ago.my grandad was sales manager at cantors. but all the men worked down the pitat one time .i,m one of the first generation of non miners in my family. if we had stayed for sure i would have gone down, be it not for long. we moved here as my dad was involved in the wire ropes for tamar suspension bridge .joining cornwall to devon. one of his jobs was a steeplejack. thats how he met my mum her family lived in bolton not far from fred dhibner.thats how i have my interest in steam engines. mums family had a few. all gone now only the memories. life goes on we make memories for ourselves now. and the kids and grandchildren.

home made heat exchanger for wvo How to make your own heat exchanger you realy need to use a simple heater for winter running

Having a heat exchanger is only part of the system needed, you also need to have twin fuel tanks so you can start and get up to running temp on regular diesel, as the heat exchanger gets its heat from the engine. I have looked into it and decided its too much hassle and initial setup costs are too high to warrant the savings.

ta for the tips, i presumed you was around 70 or more, with the stuff you come out with, my granddad was like that, could fix or make anything, from wood, metal etc etc.

im 40, but i still think im in my 20's, i look in my early 30's but my body's in the 90's!!!!

had a full life. i remember being in turkey as a child watching them fill gas bottles .we had camping gas they didnt so they filled their bottles and then tipped into ours. while smoking.
we once went with 13 people including my gran and a baby cousin. with 4 big tents in one mini bus a commer .must have been piled 3ft high on the roof .we toured all europe and down to turkey in 3 months . my uncle was brill at fixing it. how it ever made it i dont know. bet it weighed twice what it should have.
mentally i,m about 13 might grow up one day. untill then m,bikes and toys are it. my mates motto is the one with the most toys wins. come down we might let you have a play as well. one mate as 52 steam engines less than 2 mile away from here. all my mates are happy chappies. hotrods, choppers ,old cars etc like a living museum. if in doubt get more. sell one buy two.
have fun never now when he will come knocking.
cheers alan.

i would have thourght the biggest thing against using waste veg oil would be the smell

its a risk just driving down the road, or crossing it...

its a high risk filling your car at a petrol station (esp on a cool morning).

If i go around europe, i cant just pop back and exhange my calor bottle, esp if in deepest E Germany. but this i can have a large bottle, use it like mad if i want and still know im not far from getting it refilled up. thats the main thing for me, cheap and knowing i have gas where ever i am

can i just say..... i spent 2 weeks in scotland it was very cold -18 -19 one night it dropped to -20 brrrrr, paid £17 a bottle of gas heating on all the time, came back home with some still in, so say £7 per week, is that really worth all the hassle and risk of killing yourself and others, esp if you dont really know what your doing, just have 5 pints of lager instead of 7, simples

that does seem a bad price.

this is the route i would like to do with wittmann (the pretty dog) and arthur the ulgy dog. hes been to a good few of them. hoping he makes it through to next summer, as he really loves going around europe, and people love him!

i have designed on paper a large 100litre use cooking oil system for my camper, will cost about a 70 quid in parts max (much less if i can use old scrap for most of it) only trouble is if im well enough to keep filling it, as the unit is tall and slim, so has to be filled via the roof lol. it should save one hell of a lot of money on fuel.

VW veg oil holder in VW.jpg
working on a way of having a large sat dish mounted off my roof rack, as i got one of those 25quid B&Q ones, and its a 60cm dish.

trouble is while ok at designing things in my head, when it comes to actually making things im usless. :)

hi .i think its jst asdangerous filling a fuel tank with petrol. .even then some overfil or out the wrong fuel in. .. ha ha . ive done it . good job it was petrol in a diesel . think how many bottles of gasare filled every day . nearly as many as vehicles . many have been filling cigarette lighters since being small children. how many can remember those little bottles ,looked like soda siphon refills for filling gas lighters. just the same.
how about trying to pour petrol on a fire to make it burn better . makes a right mess of the can.
if you didnt try it by the age of eight-ten . best not try filling gas bottles.
bit like firing bangers out of a length of pipe. you soon learn copper pipe is the wrong pipe.

well i have filled gas lighters and petrol lighters and i still have all my fingers etc :)

i think where i said the one that is being filled it has to be inverted, i think that was for those little camping stove ones. as i cant see how you can invert a 20 or 3* kg bottle.

i used to make pressure rockets out of old plastic bottles, heat fuel to make things rise and had huge flames trailing from the back of my bike as a kid as i thought it looked like i had a jet engine when going fast....that was ok as long as i was going fast, its when i stopped the flames burnt my backside lol

i am wanting to use lots of old cooking oil for my trips. both i cannot afford to do without, and cant afford a lot of gas and diesel.

I assume you mean as fuel for your van and not for cooking with? In which case i hope you have done your research properly and not just taken the word of a few self proclaimed experts on the vw forums?
Yes you can run most diesel engines on wvo, however for how long and with what sucess depends entirely on individual engines and the quality of your processed wvo. There are so many variables to account for in the quality of the processed wvo you can end up with that there are no real hard and fast rules as to what is acceptable and what isn't. Get it right and yes you can enjoy the delights of cheap but smelly motoring, get it wrong and you will right royally screw your engine up. 75,000 plus miles on WVO and still going strong! :cool1:

£7 per week bad price?, i dont think thats a bad price to pay for your life, and others, just because i paid £17 for a bottle of gas does not make me rich or posh, just sensible, are you a mad professor or summat? i think you need to see a doc, i cant see how you want to endangour others, to yourself, yeah, but to mess with something your not sure about is wrong, and what if your not well enough to keep filling it, then what? you call 999 to help you, your mad:rolleyes2:

I enjoy the delights of "cheap but smelly motoring" as my Bongo can be run on veg oil. But personally I prefer the smell of veg oil burning to that of petro deisel.
Also Cool jules, if your thinking down this road, remember that in some EU countries it is illegal to use veg oil in motor vehicles. You would also be prudent to remember that in a country where ther are mountains to travers. The temp drops considerably very quickly and this could leave you stranded with the system gummed up with waxed oil.
I burn about 80 veg to 20 deisel mix with no additives in sumer in UK and only about 30 veg to 70 deisel in winter with red x added. You also need to change your filters frequently for the first year as veg oil will clean your system out.

I have heard this but only on the internet and have never been able to find conclusive proof one way or another as to the legality in france. Do date not had any trouble but always turn off the veg at borders.
I had no issues in the alps but i run a 2nd fuel tank for the veg oil that is heated so was able to run 100%wvo even down to -20. Just had to wait before switching over to veg a while longer than normal.
Never heard that straight veg is worse on your filters, just bio diesel as it removes the tank lining.

hi, in many countries using fresh veg oil is dearer than using diesel.i gave up in the end . dont mind using old engine oil though. always change the oil then chuck it in the diesel tank. works fine.
