In the camping and caravanning magazine , we are called spongers, because we do not use camp sites.Any one else read the article ,or going to reply.

Who cares what they call us, we just love our way of life.:dance::heart::heart::dance::dance:

haven't you seen this on other m/home forums:scared: they slag us worse than the general public it really upsets me i might not do it again honest :lol-061::lol-061::lol-061:

We have just returned from a three month trip to Norway, fabulous, we were away for 100 nights in total, two of them spent on a camp site in Geiranger Norway, the rest wild camping or Aires / Stelplatzs / Rastplatzs fantastic trip, let those who want to use campsites do so, freedom of choice it's called.:have fun:

IV'E been called worse:eek:
but then i dont spend 400 quid a week on camp sites
so i can still smile ;)

ub40 benifits dont pay for such luxurys run camper on shoestring only way i can afford hoilday

It was in a letter to the magazine, published to get a reaction I suspect :)

I can't reply as I'm not a member, but I'm sure that there are some C&CC members here who could compose a suitable response.

Well if you made your money off the back of campers I suppose you too would try to discourage those who are savvy enough to find free locations to stopover.

They generally prey on those who are less robust than many of us, scared that someone will connect up sleeping gas then rob them:rolleyes2:

So, if you think about it, those types are welcome to pay through the nose to live like battery hens while we 'free rangers' can enjoy the real outdoors.

PS Best not to disillusion them by replying IMO.

I have just read the letter posted in the CCC Magazine and it appears that the author is a Motorhomer himself and is complaining about the way other Motorhomers are abusing a local car park and it's toilets and free water to the detrement of others, it is the usual story of the few spoiling it for the majority, height barriers have now been erected in the said car park so none can use it now, he did call the abusers spongers as there is a campsite in 200yards apparently.:sad::sad:

When we owned a camp site we regularly saw free campers in the layby near our site, but so long as they did not come on our site to use our facilities it did not bother us, as even then we would go off in the winter in our motorhome and loved to wild camp. Bambi 2

We have stayed at a few French campsites that have free Aires right outside with water and drainage laid on. Very handy.

With that logic is somebody that take's a picnic to the beach instead of using cafe's and restaurant's also freeloading.

This is a good point ( there are many more examples) seems if (I) don't do it its wrong to some people

LOL - cant afford commas, or determiners like A

ub40 benifits dont pay for such luxurys, I run camper on A shoestring, it's the only way i can afford A hoilday

Northerners eh? goin' down' t' pub' wi' wippit' :D:D:D:D:D:D No offence ol' chap :)

In all seriousness - I stayed outside a campsite in an aire on my last holiday, which was odd.

Anyway - last time I stayed on a 'proper' campsite, in our last van (sprinter lwb conversion - sold for 11K 1996 with 200K miles on it - disabled adapted you see) the weirdos opposite wouldnt leave until we had, and they kept looking at us like we were going to nick something. To give you an idea - we are both degree educated professionals, own house blah blah, and swmbo is in a wheelchair - hardly good for a quick getaway!

On another forum, one of the guys watched as someone not only put out a small plastic picket fence around 'his' plot - but then proceeded to effing MOW it with a tiny flymo. No doubt a socks n sandals daily mail reader....

No camp sites for me....

Ignore such cracks. Cheap insults.

Sometimes I wonder why people use insults like this. As though personal preference doesn't come into it. I do truly believe that such people are covering up their own fear of doing the same. It's not only freecamping; it's all sorts. Every time you do anything thrifty, frugal, sensible there will be those who pretend to look down their noses at you. I don't think of myself as poor but neither am I all that well off yet I've done marvellous things and seen marvellous places. And yet, and yet, there are those who have said with a little contempt that, “Ah, yes, but you've done it on the cheap, haven't you?”

Too right, I have.

They deserve our pity.

Last campsite - Tarifa about 1995

I find it quite interesting this "wildcamping" vs "campsite" business. I'm sure that a lot more people on here would use campsites if they were not so stupidly expensive.
I have noticed that some campsites in France have put pressure on their local Maire to close wildcamping places that are near their sites.

The people who write those letters are probably the same ones who write in to complain about other campers on campsites because they dare to have children or dare to walk across the corner of their pitch on the way to the shower block or dare to go to that shower block wearing a dressing gown instead of a three-piece suit etc etc. Let's face it, some people don't have interesting lives so they have to try to spoil the enjoyment of others.

On a positive note, the kind of discrimination we receive is good for our souls - it lets us know how most decent-minded roma/travellers feel to be labelled as outcasts!

Hi All,

Have seen this letter in the C&C mag, what a sad person, we should all feel sorry for him.
I use C&C sites, CL sites, Aires and wild camp.
I hope i don't park next to him when i do use a CL site.

What forum are you on about? can't seem to find anything on the forums I use....got a link??

ignore these people.

If I was going to stay on a site I'd have bought a caravan!! And for a lot less. Aren't motorhomes made to be used 'off site'?
