If you study the broken spring, you will probably find the break is at same point and place of a paint chip, and the pit is the start of that broken point. Very common. It breaks the case hardening and the crack propogates off around the outside face.

Well broken paint and rust is what I have been told.

This. And the reason for the missing paint is because it rubs on the spring cup. You never see them broken in half, it's just one coil or so.

sounds like you have a good garage and great service. lucky you

Yes I guess I am lucky my garage for most things I a personal friend of many years standing we met a motor caravaners in the 1960's he is retired now but takes a couple of jobs a day servicing, brakes etc. I did have access to a large pit at another friends garage but he has sold up now this was very handy for me. Sadly the small one man bands are dying out and personal friendship a thing of the past.
The Exhaust chap is a small Auto garage he does anything from gearboxes to services and builds Custom Stainless Steel Exhausts to order SWIFT AUTO SERVICES he has a facebook page if anyone interested. I can certainly vouch for his work.

Looks great, Alf

When I got my T5 the outer skin on the rear box was peeling away and I thought a new box was needed but was told they all go that way and it never seemed to get any worse! weird

The exhaust guy told me nearly all T5 owners take the back box out as it does nothing he just fits pipe from main box to tail pipe. Then there is various adaptations to make noise I passed on that.
My thoughts are its there for purpose so I'll keep it.

A good idea :) Especially nowadays where the MOT Test on Exhaust and Emissions seem to also include a visual "does it look same as original" check.
