Just covering my van with lining carpet is it safe to go right up to oven

depends how hot the oven walls get.

How do you manage with a socket outlet directly above the hob?
Suppose it is only used when the hob lid is down, and when not used, is protected by the glass hob cover?

thats right, its for the rare occasions when on electric, used for elec kettle, and the glass lid protects it when cooking
