THE LITTLE MUTT

Guest
MY husband John (he is the Aussie) and I are planning to spend 5 weeks in UK and Europe arriving beginning October 2011.
We pick up a Motor Home from Chertsey... and will have it for 5 weeks.
We would like help with an itinerary around England, Wales and Scotland. Thought of 10 - 12 days. We would like to include Cornwall ( possibly our first stop). We need help with places to stay with the van which is safe and cheap if not free. Also any information regards daylight hours, weather, must see places or anything else we should know.
Thanks, look forward to your replies Lynley (Kiwi):help:

You can get a lot of wild sites by downloading the POI database that Canalsman maintains for full members.

Itinerary - geez thats asking - there is so much to see and do in the UK (and Europe) its really hard to advise you - we spent 9 months a few years ago and only scratched the surface. What are you interested in? National Trust membership is worth it if you like stately homes, gardens, woodlands, castles. Lots of fantastic scenery once you are away from the Motorways, lots of small backroads "B" and " C" class have some superb scenery.

Before picking up the van see some of London using public transport - very easy, use one of the tour buses, have a trip down the Thames from Westminster to Greenwich.

My route would be from Chertsey would be to got towards the South Coast around Chichester then along to the New Forest, Dorset just wander, head west into Devon and over the top of Dartmoor then onto the North Cornish coast, down to Lands End for the obligatory photo at the signposts with Auckland and Sydney. Back along the South Coast and cut up towards South Wales - meander through the Brecon Beacons. That should see the best part of 12 days if you are stopping to look see along the way. If you speed up a bit you might be able to do a flying visit to the Midlands.

If you are going to Europe think about using the Poole to Cherbourg route and then something like Dieppe or Calais to return to the UK.

Thank you

Thanks Roger for taking the time to help..Much appreciated..Will study all you information..Regards John

Hi Dee..
Thank you so much for your kind offer & thoughts.
We stay at Chertsey on Monday night 3rd October and head your way next morning.
The plan is to have a look around for a day or two.
As we are flying blind your generosity would be great appreciated.
Hope you don't mind a phone call around that time.
Not sure exact day but hopefully we will meet and enjoy some great local English hospitality.
Looking forward to it already.
Kindest regards. Lynley & John

Hi Shane, Carole & Kai.
Thank you so much for the kind invite. So many friendly people have helped us already. Can't wait to meet some of them. We will be spending some time in the Galashiels/Melrose area where Lynley's (Pringle) ancestors settled and are buried at the abbey. We thought a drive up to Edinburgh would be worth having a look for a few days (This is on another post). You are in the right area for a visit on our trip south. Hope you are available around 8th/9th October for a visit. Not sure how to contact you. We are sure you will love NZ when you get there. Regards Lynley & John

Hi and :welcome: to the site - if you make it as far as the Outer Hebrides call in and see us, I will send my address and phone number via PM - A must to visit is the Highlands of Scotland you will not regret it, come up the West coast via Perth, Aviemore, Inverness, Isle of Skye (you can get a ferry from Uig on Skye to Tarbert on the Isle of Harris and then Stornoway to Ullapool) on the main land then up the coast to Durness and then across the top of Scotland to John o' Groat and down the East Coast via Edinburgh.
