Interesting Whitby or just Fake News

Why is Whitby a hot topic amongst Wild Campers? (curious to know as thinking of moving into that general area)

I think it's popularity stems fro the fact that it is largely unchanged. No fun fairs or, flashing lights. It's still an old fashioned family sea side resort with the added bonus of fantastic views. You can be nearly alone on the coastline within a few hundred yards of the harbour.Nearly forgot to mention The Abbey and St Mary's Church on The headland. The only downside, there are way too many fish and chip shops for such a small place.:D
It's a hot topic because until relatively recently you could overnight there. Used to be lots of spots.

I went there a couple of weeks ago and felt for a Friday afternoon in Feburary (albeit a School Half Term Friday, I think) it was just too busy and come summer it must be heaving.
Bring in cruise ships and I reckon it would be a nightmare!

Having said that, at least I could find a space in the car park!

It does get very busy . Apart from folk week I would stop there quite often during the week , off season .
If I want a Yorkshire town I go to Skipton mostly

It can't cope now in Summer never mind with cruise liners disgorging their thousands. Has anyone told him they are bigger than the Regal Lady and Yorkshire Belle.

Portsmouth has succeeded in attracting more cruise ships, but can only take the smaller types. Many of the passengers are taken off on excursions, but those that stay in town make a noticeable impact. Think of the difference in size of the two places and the impact an extra few thousand people would make to the queues in the narrow lanes of old Whitby.

Don’t think they deserve it after the way the motorhomer get treated like something the council stood on .only my feelings ,we love Whitby but do not visit any more

Surely if there were too many chip shops, you wouldn't have to queue for half an hour for chips?
Last time I went to Whitby I found a Bedford Plaxton Blim bus parked up in a street, made my day it did.....

We have given up on Whitby as well. Whats the point they evidently don't want MH's there but the local businesses do especially during the 9 months that is NOT the summer season. Businesses still have Staff and Council Taxes to pay throughout the year so any income is appreciated. The massive car park does not have any large spaces so you are expected to pay for two. The Council that runs this area seem to have gone out of their way to get rid of MH's yet they are now looking at way to get more visitors. Where are these Cruise Ships going to be coming from in the first place. Whitby is hardly on the way to anywhere apart from some of the Norwegian Ports and how do you get 2 - 3000 people of a Cruise Ship at sea ( Health and Safety ) and into a small harbour. Someone hasn't really sorted out the logistics of this one.

It would be a cheaper exercise to provide a couple of Aires at £10 a night and have people using them and spending money in the local area.

It appears SBC do want tourism just not ours !

Whitby ( and surrounding district) is a lovely place and the issue is not with the town just the clowns that run it

Channa

.

Interesting last line there :)
I'm thinking of moving to that general area (somewhere between the North Yorkshire Coast and Yorkshire Dales) and maybe trying to find a place which will let me have an "Aires" type area to generate a bit of income from. Sounds like it would be quite popular (although maybe not with Wild Campers who don't want to pay to stay!)

Sounds like you are looking for something more rural ?
Problem , for me anyway , when visiting Whitby (or most towns) I prefer stopping in the city centre .
They have the space just not the will .
Like many I won't be back until this changes

This is the problem with a lot of places. No point in being 3 - 5 miles out of town as its just not possible to get there. I know we can get our bikes out but have you seen the speed some of these idiots drive at down winding country lanes. Bad enough when you meet them in a MH not so good on a bike. We have been looking for CL's for our trip to Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. We have been before and a lot of places were inaccessible via a MH or they expected you to pay double price for a Car Park. Distinct lack of CL's near the sea and very expensive campsites with lots of things we don't want. Looked at hiring a car but the hire charges double when you add on insurance so we thought we might just as well take the car. Find a nice CL inland and pitch the MH for a couple of weeks while we have a look round the area. Far more choice that way. Even looked at buying a Caravan instead but by the time we have changed the car for something to pull it might as well stop with what we already have. Not going to tow as the car is to big but SWMBO enjoys driving. Already tried it down to Bournemouth and only managed to loose her once on the way back when I got in the wrong lane at a roundabout. I pushed my way into the correct lane but they wouldn't let SWMBO follow so she had to take a detour.

It's perfectly feasible to have a cruise ship stand off and take people ashore in tenders. It's done in a lot of places. The Titanic had a smaller version of her to act as tender, and that still survives. The same system is used to get US Navy personnel ashore when their aircraft carriers moor in the Solent for R&R

Hmm. I think it may be a little different these days with H&S regulations and wheelchair & disability accessibility requirements ;) I can just see Granny Maude and Grandpa Wilber bouncing into the harbour on a Zodiac with their Zimmers dragging behind the outboard :p

I took my Father on a cruise to Norway.
Anchored offshore for 2 of the "ports" (eg Gerainger)
He got lifted into a tender somehow Cannot remember if it was dine in his wheelchair..But the wheelchair was with us when we were ashore.
Simply care and lots of helping hands...
They know how to do it..
They need to know as many passengers have limited mobility.
They need to be able to do it so the passengers can goon the cruise (and pay)

PS1 they probably make more money on the on-shore tours than they do on the cruise itself !
PS2 the tenders were proper boats (in fact the Lifeboats)

Will the Council put up 'No overnight parking' notices a mile offshore?
