Hi all
If you are a hymer owner can I pick your brains please. We are looking at a hymer 644 and want a 2.5td engine..we have seen 644's with Mercedes , Fiat or Citroen engines. Of the two we have seen with Citroen engines both have had gearbox probs...is this a common fault on the citroens ? And out of the three different engines which would give a better source of parts readily available both here and in Europe. And last question, is it a mammoth job in time and money to change the gearbox in the Citroen engined 644? Any experience or thoughts very welcome

Hum, difficult one.

I'm not a Hymer owner but my experience over the years would be to avoid the Citroen engine - sorry Citroen owners - parts availability on the Benz and Fiat engined base vehicle is much better and the dealer network across Europe is extensive. The have been problems with the Fiat gearbox, particularly in reversing up a gradient - believe this is now ironed out.

:goodluck:

We have a fiat engined 644 non turbo and not had any problems but have heard they are prone to a problem 5th gear although can't remeber what.

i have the mercedes hymer the old one with the 2.9 diesel and semi auto gearbox thats still going strong
the only things ive heard of is people changing the diffs and wheels to get a better speed
