can be a challenge to get into 1st when cold and suspect probably the wrong grade of oil in the box so decided to change the oil....

drain plug is a bit "hairy", should I be worried?

You dont say what kind of van, but that oil looks like the thick stuff that some people would put in to keep a noisy gearbox quiet.Had the van long?

Its not too bad, on the plus side the magnetic plug has done its job.

To be on the safe side run some cheapo gear fluid through for a few miles then drain that out. It should bring any other nasties out with it. Then invest in some top quality oil. Its amazing what a difference a good oil can do.

I use Amsoil as its service intervals are unbeatable plus its reputation cant be beaten either.

Call Don at AMSOIL Performance Oils Ltd and he can recommend you the correct spec.

Ive seen dead gearboxes resurrected with a dose of Amsoil.

Im just about to do my 1990 Citroen 25 as reverse is hard to get when hot

Ah good point, it's a '92 peugeot j5 2.5td.... and no :( 3 months

I changed the gear oil to Comma semi synthetic on my VW T4 and it improved the gearbox no end. It used to crunch going into 5th before the oil change.:)

And now it crunches in every gear? :)

What oil have you put in? Sounds like its not up to the job and you need a sticker (viscosity) oil. Its well worth a call to an expert, explain the symptons and your vehicle to recommend a fluid. See my post above.

Hope it helps

Mike

edit: this is the stuff i have been recommended on the C25, two litres is the quantity. I will report back next monday when it gets done by the garage. http://www.performanceoilsltd.co.uk/sae75w-90_gear_oil.html
