'92 Peugeot J5 LHD column shift, which I'm sure you all know is the same as a ducato, having difficulty selecting 1st gear in particular but 2nd also and feels that I'm just not clearing the gate, can the shift be adjusted on these?

not sure about adjustment but there is an anti vibration coupling on the gear rod under bonnet i would check this first

Couple of things you should check first:-

Gearbox oil condition and level. Very important on these, as they will destroy 5th gear if the level drops even a small amount. Difficult gear selection is often the first sign of low oil.

Clutch adjustment or condition. If the clutch adjustment is out and allowing drag this can make selection difficult. Without knowing the mileage or history its hard to say, but on that year if it is on it's original clutch this may be a sign that it's on the way out.

great geoff, is it obvious how to check the oil level? fill plug perhaps?

what grade of oil should be in there?

Friend has had problem with his Hymer fiat gear selection. turned out previous owner had a new clutch fitted in France, A Pattern one :(
Exeter g/box center said the pattern ones are ****E !! and re-placed it with genuine one, Lo and behold it selects like a new motor now, just need the anti vibe rubber as well.
Anyone got the part number or a source for them ?
hope that helps. New Clutch fitted was £500 not cheap but cheaper than a new g/box !!

had a lay under the van earlier (on my newly laid slabs, much better than gravel for lying on ;))

found a dipstick on the top/rear of the diff, assume this covers the box as well? in any event, oil there is clean and on the top mark, need to confirm if there's a separate dip for the box?

ah ha, had a more through read of the link provided above and although for the petrol it all makes sense, think I'll be replacing the gear oil and to the revised higherlevel :)
